Just bought a lovely little mare for my daughter and she is very fizzy. This isnt a problem in the school or jumping as she isnt strong.I have been taking her out for hacks to get her used to the area and also settle her before I let my daughter take her out.She is very nervous but not really spooky had all sorts thrown at us today grouse rabbits motorbikes and horse and cart which she handled really well. Its the excitmement or nervous tension that is a bit of a problem she sweats and shakes and will jiggy jog although she doesnt do anything bad. I had a few canters on the spot on the stubble so will avoid them until she settles she just needs something to take the edge off her.She was dripping in sweat and all foamy when we finished . I really think its nervous tension and wondered what calmers work best .I have altered her feed as she was on alpha a with oil and put her basic dengie mix with low energy feed. She is on magnesium but I dont know what brand as it came with her.
She is a tbx and only 6 so quite young.

I darent cut her feed she is a little underweight shes 16 h 468 kg.Im giving her hay in the field and plenty of roughage as grass is a bit scarce.Ill have a look at feedmark supplement thanks

Only 2 weeks but we knew she was on her toes when we bought her.Shes the calmest thing to handle and really gentle but just very forward and nervy ridden.I know she lacks a little confidence and she can take as long as she need to settle .She fine with us you can walk up to her in the field when shes laying down and reacts like she been with us forever. She is very tense ridden and I would like to help calm her a little.

yes my mare is the sam shes connemara x shes realy good to handle but is a nightmare to ride, sadley i havnt got the time to ride her 6 days a week so she is being sold at the end of the month for somthing safer, but steady up realy worked well for her when she was a youngster and in regular work,

I work for a retailer and we sell the global herbs products.
We have heard that the thoroughbred calmer works well, but it is very strong in taste and unless you have a good feeder, your horse may not eat it.
The other one that is very good calmer, regards giving the horse confidence is the Natural Animal Feeds Magic Calmer, this one contains magnesium in the calmer, and if used you shouldnt need to feed the other source of magnesium you already have. (Caution unless the magnesium supplement is specifically designed to feed to horses, you could be causing trouble as the ratios between magnesium and the other minerals wont be correct, especially if it is designed for cows!)
I hope all goes well in settling her down and chilling her out.

YO gave her new youngster V calm last night. The difference this morning was quite astounding.

Maybe worth a go but as the v is for valerian it may not be ideal for comps etc.

We have had this with some of ours until they get to know the area and they settle realy well. Home is safe so they are quiet there. Going out is full of monsters which puts them on edge. When they are used to the monsters the tension goes.
I was speaking to someone last week who bought a horse and was at the point of selling it as it got her so frightened of rideing it. It had only been with her three weeks when it started her loseing her enjoyment.
She bought a calmer for it and an hour later there was a huge difference.
The difference once the lady had calmed herself with the thought of giveing the horse a calmer. They are now going on a sponsored ride.
Her tension was feeding through to the horse and they were windeing each other up.
I had given up takeing one of ours out to shows etc. She was an absolute nightmare.
I had to admit after she was used for a demonstration - well while it was going on to the audience that it was me. I get very stressed at shows and the pony was picking it up. Although i think i act calm around them it is still in me.
It is the same when the farrier comes. If i am late i go rushing into the field and they all run off. They normally all come for a cuddle. The demonstrater said my body language is telling them to go. He was so right. My farrier always laughs about it.
It may not be right as only you know the situation but i found the ladies comments very interesting.
Good luck

Hi - congratulations on the new horse!

I use GH TB calmer on my anglo when I am bringing him back into work (which is roughly every 3 months so i.e. all the time!) and it does keep him sane. You have to front load in the beginning for a couple of days and it does seem like a lot of powder but my boy loves the taste. Might be good to split the dail does into several feeds, which will also help her put on weight.

It doesnt turn them into zombies but it makes them think a bit before they react. I took him off it to see if there was any difference and after 2 days he was straight back on again. He is now on the maintenance dose as I think it has also helped him keep weight on (would spend all day worrying and cribbing otherwise).

It isnt based on magnesium so works when magnesium ones dont do anything. I tried everything before I found this (topspec, hiltons, NAF etc) and the next ones on the list were cool, calm and collected and nupafeed.

i think Equine America Magnitude is for just this type of problem and it's quite economical. (I use their So Kalm and that's also very good but mine's just for one off's when we are travelling or doing exciting things). I also found changing my boy onto Allen & page Ride & Relax helped (no barley). I think from what i can gether on here, different calmers work well for different horses, so it's a case of trial and error.

Hi,

I have tried lots of calmers on my horse and only the one you mention is the one that worked.

A lot of horses (lighter in build) cannot cope with magnesium based calmers, in fact it makes them worse which is what is so different with the global herbs one, it doesnt have any in it. I also have a friend who has a stressy arab x who it worked for as well.

I think it actually does have some magnesium in it. It is certainly magnetised. However it is difficult to really know what is in it as it doesnt have a a full list of ingredients although it isnt based on magnesium (like magnitude etc are).

Magnesium will only work if your horse is deficient in magnesium. The GH stresscare one is meant to be for all breeds and the TB calmer for lighter breeds (TBs, arabs etc).

Sounds like I will be out tomorrow to buy some. Will probably put my full tb on as well as like yours hes always coming back into work after injury then we have loony moments and he reinjures himself.
Interesting comments from some about magnesium as she might have been on the one intended for cattle seeings the previous owners fed her on cattle feed!.She was on midds so I have changed that to a high fibre low energy feed from top spec.I am also trying glocal herbs vits for her and strongbone for my broken tb.Would like to put him on tendoneaze as well but thats funds permitting hes just blasted round the field after recovering from splints kick injury and tweaked his tendon. My local tack shop love me at the moment . Im going to rename him tripod.

What about hacking her out with another horse for company just until she knows the area and rides a bit better?

I wonder if its the magnesium thats upsetting her will drop it tomorrow and get her on gh .Just read up on product and it does state no magnesium.
Your tb is that the one with a white blaze looks so like my boy apart from his facial markings he has a blaze with two ginger patches looks like specs or the scream mask.
I love chestnuts handsome boy/girl.
I will try it on him as well when he comes back into work keep him sane and balanced for first few weeks.
I do think alot of the problems are adrenaline related.

Hey, dont know if you have solved the problem yet but i would definately recomend Nupafeed Magnesium calmer. I have used it on lots of different horses and it has been amazing, especially with the really nervous highly stung ones which sounds like yours. It is just magnesium but of a very high grade, far better than you get in other products - it is made by a pharmaceutical company that make products for human medicine which gives me alot more faith in it!! At the moment i have a mad TB - was asprinter and only came out of training last year but it makes a huge difference to him, without it he is a bit dangerous to be around!! He also looks like a little tank, everybody keeps asking me how on earth i get him looking like he does and the answer is the Nupafeed- becasue it stops him box walking all day and generally being an idiot he keep the weight on really well. they are mail order, have a look at thier website. The people on the phone are really nice, you try giving them a call and ask them about it, they won't try and force sell you any!!

Thanks for info tb calmer has helped but she is a very anxious horse so might go down that route.I have a ex sprinter as well been out of racing 2 1/2 years .Thanks

Hi. I have only just seen your reply- sorry!

My boy (yes the one with the blaze) is actually an Andalusian.
