If this is a problem in other areas of your life, it may be worth speaking to your GP about taking a very low dose of blood pressure medication to take the edge off your anxiety.

However, if it is just while riding, there are a few options. You could try Rescue Remedy, which seems to work quite well for some people. Hypnotherapy can be very successful as can visualisation techniques.

I tried the premier performance cz human kalm cookies, and whilst they taste abit yuck, I think they did take the edge off slightly, (maybe it’s a placebo effect?)

If you haven't got one, a sympathetic instructor can really help. I changed to a different instructor who specialised in riders who lack confidence (found through word of mouth) a few years ago and it has transformed both me and my horse. I used to dread lessons but now I really look forward to them.

So an update I tried rescue remedy didnt really make any difference have booked Hypnotherapy for Wednesday evening. I didnt even get on in my lesson tonight just worked on lunging. I am also finding that now everyone is back at work I am a bit stuck for support and therefore I have a hacking buddy at the weekend and poss one morning a week. I dont want to lunge him him on all the other days so I do in hand walks with him which although challenges his brain its not strenuous exercise although I make him walk out properly. I just feel like we are going backwards again, I really need to sort out the anxiety as its really spoiling my enjoyment of my pony. He is such a good boy for a youngster and welsh to boot. Fingers crossed

...have booked Hypnotherapy for Wednesday evening.

I'll be really interested in how this goes.

A fellow at a club I frequent for table tennis went to a hypnotist decades ago to give up smoking. It worked. I've been wondering ever since whether I should get some hypnosis to get over my silly worries about riding.

Some rescue remedies have an alcohol base. Essential oils of lavender or chamomile are good. You can add a few drops to oil (any oil, even just a vegetable cooking oil) and rub it on your skin, or in steam and inhale it.

I always have some rescue remedy in the lorry no idea if it works but I will have a few drops if I am feeling very nervous. Actually, I'm trying to change my mind set from the worrying about "what if?" which gives me endless possibilities of gloom and doom, to focusing on what I do /did well and could do better next time. eg Hacking out on the road Rose whipped round when she saw a tractor and cantered all of 5 metres back the way we'd come towards the traffic. Old Oldie would have focused on, gosh that was a narrow escape, what about if there had been a car immediately behind me, what about if I couldn't have stopped her, what about if she'd slipped etc etc, new Oldie is saying, dealt with that fine, next time try to be a bit quicker to put her in shoulder in AND put your bloody leg on, you let her whip round because you didn't ask her to go forward! Accepting that I can't control anything other than myself and my horse has probably been one of the biggest steps forward I've made and it really does start with taking control of the horse. Good luck, feeling nervous is horrible but it is possible to feel more confident and fwiw I bought myself an air vest as I know my old body can't cope with a fall as well as it used to.
