Can anyone tell me if keeping your horse on a calmer long term would be detrimental to health.

My horse is currently on Horse First Relax Me calmer and it has worked amazingly on his very stressy and nervous nature. He is very happy and putting on weight and a pleasure to ride again.

I've never used calmers before and have no experience with them - is there any long term effects or am I worrying over nothing?

Calmers is a term coined by companies to sell you their supplements.

By feeding most 'calmers' you are actually attempting to plug whatever gap there is in the horse's diet that is causing aggitation. Issues such as digestive discomfort or mangesium imbalance are common (you have both magnesium and brewer's yeast in the blend you are feeding).

There are no long term side effects from this.

Any 'calmers' that actually calm, as in a sedative effect, are banned from competition and would state they are not for long term use....such as sedatives by the vet or herbal concoctions such as valerian.

Thank you Thank you!!
I'm so glad this is the case! He is a rescue horse and was very badly starved as a youngster so perhaps this has caused a long term inbalance in his system.
I tried just magnesium oxide for a year which helped but did not work as well as this "calmer" - i'm very glad i can keep him on it safely as it has improved his outlook greatly and he even kept his weight up over the winter and didnt worry it off.
