Hi,
I have a gelding who was used as a stud horse before being cut aged 5, he was an absolute terror (false rig), but with the use of Rigcalm from global herbs soon calmed into an angel. He does however have occasional moody days still, and on said moody days (ears back, swishy tail, stamping of feet and teeth out if another horse comes within 10 yards), someone suggested i try a supplement/calmer to balance out whatever might be making him crabby. He's never ever crabby with me (unless he's doing flat work), but his teeth have become a bit of a liability in the field so i looked into what might be causing it.
As I understand it, if a horse is lacking in magnesium it can be grumpy/spooky/anxious and a magnesium based calmer will help. Likewise Brewers yeast can help with horses lacking in vitamin B, etc... BUT there are many reports of horses put on calmers becoming worse, apparently as a result of them being given something they arent lacking, thus tipping the balance the wrong way.
So, my horse is fed a complete feed (equilibrium low), has brewers yeast all year round for sweet itch, and rigcalm (which is pure magic), I thought I'd try Stroppy Gelding, which is supposed to balance out hormones in much the same way stroppy mare does. Ten days in, he suddenly went from placid but grumpy to outright evil. His grumps escalated to physical attacks on other horses (especially mares), and he was wired on his toes like a games pony at the world finals which he has never ever been before. He's tried kicking the dogs on the yard, wont stand tied up (the rig calm stopped all this last summer) and calls every few minutes though we dont know who he's calling to as everyone comes in at night and the yard is U shaped so he can see each of his friends. He's been off it for over a week and is nowhere near as edgy as he was, so I can only assume its the stroppy gelding thats done it as nothing else has changed at all.
I'd rather leave him to be grumpy than risk another supplement, Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?
