I am lucky enough to have Pippa stabled right by the South Downs, which is beautiful for hacking. However it consists of lots of rolling hills and wide open spaces all of which excite Pippa! So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a calmer that would just take the edge off her to allow for better stopping power. Before I have to go down the route of possibly upping her bit... Thanks in advance.

I find with upping her bit may make her fight more or pull harder like my mare does! I currently use top spec calmer, it's worked amazingly for my mare and I've been thro alot of them this year!!

Its trial and error to find a calmer, my friend has great results with Top Spec calmer, where as it sent mine through the roof! I've had good results with global herbs super calm and TB calmer, and I hear good things of nupafeed too.

The first calmer I tried on my mare was Naf Magic which had no effect at all, I then tried Blue Chip Liguid calmer and did notice a small change. I bought Nupafeed last year and after 2-3weeks I did notice a difference and kept her on that for about 8months but it is very expensive. About 5 months ago I thought I'd just try Magnesium Oxide(Heavy) as it is 99.2% pure at just £11.99. I give a heaped desert spoon in her feed as per instructions and she has been great on it. She has always been very spooky and this seems to take the edge off.

Hi, when my TB pony colt lived in I used to have difficulties handling him at home and away, I tried some herbal stuff that was given to me but it didn't work, then I tried a supplement called Relax Me, I was so convinced it wouldn't work because he was so highly strung but half way through the first small tub I noticed a dramatic change in him!
Good luck :)

Another vote for TopSpec calmer, works in mine if I need it! Actually best check I have some, horses are in at night now and he is getting clipped today, might be a bit lively tomorrow!

I feed Mollichaff Calmer which is a chaff with vits, mins, magnesium, mint, Lemon balm and cammomile (sp?).
I don't feed the reccomended amount as this would be 2kgs a day....that's a hell of a lot of chaff! I actually just feed 1 scoop a day and it does take the edge off.
Sorry to ask a question on your thread but.....if you were feeding less Mollichaff calmer than reccomended, like me, would you use an additional calmer or magnesium supplement?

Thanks for the replies, I'll have a look into some of those and give them a go! Nuttychesnuthorse, I think you might be right about her fighting a stronger bit as she is quite a strong willed mare, hopefully a calmer will do the trick.

A deficency in magnesium can sometimes cause excitable behaviour hence why it is used as a calmer. Interesting article here -http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/health/magnesium-121.shtml
So to actually know whether or not your horse needs it would be to have blood tests, or equally try it and moniter for impovement.
In theory your horse wouldn't be getting the reccomended daily amount of calmer, so it might not have as much of an effect. But if you horse 'behaves' fine on this there wouldn't be need to change. Probably the easiest way to know your horse was getting all the calmer they needed would be to put them on a normal chaff and then just feed a calmer at the reccomended dose.
