I have been thinking for a while now about putting Josie on a calmer. The fitter she gets the more she's blowing her brain Not in a nasty way, but sometimes she just does my head in.

She's become very nappy too. She's feeling and looking fab. When she works she's just amazing, never thought I'd get work out her like I have been, but it's taking longe rand longer for her to engage brain, and sometimes, she never seems to 'come down'. I've never known her fit before, so thought I could just try to calm her down a bit?

Anyone got and good reccomendations?

LOL - Bonnie has been far more settled on the calmer, must be nicer for htem too, not to be so on edge.

we even managed a canter on the gallops recently - something i was dreading. being an ex racer too, i had my heard in my mouth as the last time we cantered on there she bucked every stride.

Yeah not braved the canter out yet. I know it would be head down bronk. She's not a nasty mare in anyway atall, just so bloomin full of herself, and opinionated, I like that one!!

I use Dodson and Horrell's Placid on my boy who's a bit of a highly strung and stroppy teenager that I've nick named 'Kevin'. When I first started giving it to him, I didn't tell anyone, yet everyone started to comment on how much calmer and better behaved he was. I now just use it for special occassions, like the first time he met the bloodhounds -he didn't bat an eyelid - woke up though once we got moving!

Highly recommend Nupafeed. My TB event horse can get incredibly tense and stressy, the difference when he is on Nupafeed and has a booster dose before a competition is awesome, his concentration levels rise massively and the tantrums disappear. Looks expensive initially but on maintenance dose works out at £13.50 per month which is actually cheaper than many other calmers on the market.

Looking at all the replies (and I can add another by recommending the Equine America one BKalm!) I do believe it is 'try it and see' to a large extent. There are lots on the market and not every horse will respond to the same one.
I like the ones with magnesium and tryptophan, as I think they have a more 'scientific' basis than the purely herbal ones, but I have probably got it all wrong and will be shouted down!

Global herbs Supercalm or Magcalm. Equine America's BKalm, Naf Magic. They are all pretty good and very similar in that they are a magnesium based calmer. You won't get results overnight, but they are worth trying.

I've always been very pleased with Feel Good 30 Science Formula calmer. I tried swapping to NAF Magic as it was much easier to get hold of but it had nowhere near as good an effect on him, after a week or so he was starting to get edgy & that was in the summer when he's at his calmest. I also tried Top Spec calmer but he wouldn't touch it - worked very well on my friend's mare though.

Thanks everyone. Marius_Mum looks like you're right. Could be a little trial and error going on here. I'll try the ones I can get hold of easily first and see how that works I guess x

My TB mare has been on Naf Magic for over a year and it does take the edge off her attitude! I've also got a tub of Equine America So-Kalm Plus waiting to be trialed (perhaps I should try it on the gelding the next time he sees a farrier hehe - see Farriers post in Veterinary!)
