Not sure if this should be here or in veterinary, but have noticed So Kalm mentioned in another post. We have a very fizzy 13hh pony. She is outgrown by my daughter and we have a new young rider just starting on her. She is on Steady Up, which just takes the edge off her but she is still a bit loopy. The girl is hoping to take her to her first competition in a couple of weeks. Would any other calmer have a bit more of an impact just for this first outing. Should add that she is jumping so obviously don't want anything that is going to put her or her rider at risk. Would welcome any opinions.

You can get So-Kalm in a paste form to give to the horse 2 hours before whatever you want them calm for. I'm literally now waiting for my horse's two hours to be up so I can turn her out, so if she doesn't try and trash her field again I'll know it's worked! She's also on So Kalm powder in her feed and it has calmed her down no end to handle, she was getting very difficult to lead about the yard before I put her on it but now is only difficult in the field.

Thanks, definitely sounds worth a try. Is the powder ok to give long term, or is it better just for a few days before an event. Might try the paste before the vet comes to give her her flu jab - always good for a laugh!

Powder is meant as a long-term one, you can up the dose instead of using the paste before an event I think (but I had already bought the paste so might as well use it). It's meant to be good stuff. I hope it works and my horse is in one piece after her outing to her field pen today!

I think with calmers it's often a case of playing around to see what works for the individual - sorry if that's not a lot of help to you!

Personally I find Feel Good 30 Science Formula calmer works really well on Jim (plus he's happy to eat it). A friend swears by Nupafeed which I've never tried but certainly seems to have a strong effect on her extremely sharp & neurotic warmblood. Certainly neither of these would dope her up enough that her or her rider at risk, they just seem to stop the very extreme behaviour & "switching off" that both horses are prone to - when Jim gets too wound up he seems to blank out his rider then scares himself even more as he feels there's no-one to turn to.

I've tried NAF Magic but it didn't have enough of an effect on Jim, plus he didn't really like it so getting him to eat was a problem. Top Spec calmer he wouldn't touch no matter what I tried but a friend's horse gobbled it up & she was much less moody on it. I've also tried straight MagOx but again it wasn't enough, better than nothing but still leaving him too edgy & overreactive unless conditions were perfect.

Bluechip have a new product on the market called 'Karma' - magnesium based, my friend has started using it but too early to tell you if it is working or not but good thing about it, like all Bluechip products is it meant to taste very yummy !

I agre with the Feel Good 30 calmer as I also have a neurotic, sharp warmblood and this has really calmed him down......

Worth a try......

Thanks for all the replies. Guess it is going to be a case of trial and error. One snag with the paste which my daughter pointed out, the pony is a nightmare to give worming paste to,so syringing a paste into her mouth might wind her up so much the calmer won't have a chance! Bless her, the joys of pony owning.
