Hi, Im wondering if anyone can help me.
I have a very highly strung 15.1hh appaloosa x anglo arab, im currently too scared to ride him as he napps and rears and ive always been a very confident rider but now im thinking of parting with him.
Anyway Id like to see if by trying to change his feed one more time I can make any diffence to him.
The best he's ever been is when he's been worked every day at a proper yard with facilities and he was on dengi hi-fi and allan & page calm on condition, ans global herbs supa calm sachets when we went out to shows.
But now he's at home and I dont have a nice safe school to ride him in and the cold weather has made the roads slippery he's just way too mad to ride, i changed him over to Alfa -a and he's still on calm and condtion and ive tried Global herbs everyday calmer and also wedal herbs calmer and nothing will calm him down, he's still bargy, and tries to get me off if I do ride him, and he runs off on the lunge!
He is turned out all day and has plenty of grass.
Any ideas anyone?

Try switching to Mollichop Calmer and low energy cool nuts. I've been able to take my stressy TB boy off a calmer supplement since switching to M/chop Calmer. However, I do also need to keep my boy in work even if its just lunge work when I haven't got time to school. If you want to keep your horse at home though and you're always going to be limited with being able to exercise then maybe a horse with a calm temperament is what you need before you lose so much confidence that you don't want to continue riding. If you've lost your confidence so much that you feel you can't get back on then get a professional or someone you know who is very confident to get him going again. I recently moved yards and ended up moving back when he wouldn't settle well enough so it may be that you need to consider not having him at home if he's the horse you want long term. Sorry I know its hard knowing what to do. My boy has been through a few naughty patches where I've considered selling him but I now know he's just a horse you have to keep regularly exercised. If I didn't have the facilities to be able to do that I would probably have had to put him on loan to someone who could keep him exercised and get something with a temperament to match my ability and available time. Good luck with whatever path you choose but remember, they cost a lot of money and they're supposed to be fun !

Hi thanks for the reply, i hav'nt heard of Molly chop calmer before ive seen the normal one and the apple ones etc, Il have a hunt for it, what brand of nuts do you use and does it keep his weight on?
I have arranged for him to go to a show producer to be sold but id like to give him one more final chance, but as you say I know he's the sort of horse that does need exercise every day and I dont really want to keep him on a livery yard.

I use Winergy Equilibrium low energy along with NAF Magic calmer for my horse who can be quite sensitive and "jumpy" out on hacks. The combination seems to have really helped. I hope to stop the Magic in the spring, but am so impressed with the Winergy I will continue to feed it. The blurb says it "Promotes positive behaviour". It seems quite expensive (I use a £9.50 bag per week) but that is all I give him as it is a complete feed, and he looks absolutely fab. However, I agree with the others that sometimes you have to admit that yours is not a perfect partnership and maybe it's best to part company before your nerve goes completely - horses don't make good pets and it's a lot of money to be spending on something that you don't really enjoy. Good luck.

i use the winergy feeds as well and can honestly say if he's still nuts on the low energy one, he's probably always going to be that way.

I have a horse very similar, she needs constant work and activity to keep her brain sane - it is exhausting and i completely symperthise. she's definitley much more level on the winergy than she was before.

My anglo is a fizzy type that needs to be worked everyday. He is fed hi-fi lite (any hint of molasses sends him nuts), Spillers fibre cubes (cannot give him anything with too much energy) and speedibeet (def not regular sugar beet).

I also feed him GH TB calmer - the other GH calmers did nothing, nor did the wendalls one or the magnesium based ones. On this diet he is manageable if ridden 3 or 4 times a week - he is now in light work as he has a reoccuring injury and he is quite sane provided he has turnout. He is a poor doer as well so I make sure he has adlib hay and he has kept the weight on well this year.

Previously (before this regime) he was worked pretty hard everyday and had 14 hours of turnout and he was still batty. He was impossible to lead anywhere and he ran off on every hack. He was on more conditioning feeds and he was also fed oil to keep weight on but I think it sent him nuts as well.

I have heard good reports about Horse First Relax Me but not tried it.
