I know this shouldn't really be in here but since you all post such good action shots thought I'd ask in here to find out what camera you use.

I don't have a massive budget (no SLR for me!) but looking for something that will take decent jumping pics. Any recommendations?

Thank you

i've got a Sony DSC-H50 which has a really good zoom (ideal for xc photos, better than a dot in the distance!) and also does vid, easy to switch between stills and vid, and you can zoom in while videoing (many can't.) really pleased with it.

Canon ixus is a great little digital camera, and it has a good video mode which you can often get a nice still from if you download Picasa and learn how to 'take a snapshot' from a movie, but the quality of an SLR is so much better you might aswel save up, wait a bit longer and get a cheaper SLR.

This was taken on my ixus in video mode and then I paused it at this point and took a snapshot

you can see how blurry the background is and how the point of focus is around the saddle, and the contrast and detail picked up isn't that great.

Compare that to this...

taken on an SLR in rapid fire/sports mode some much more details is captured, and because it each pic on an SLR is such a huge file it means that even if you get a shot quite a distance away you can crop it and zoom in to make a reasonable pic and not loose any of the quality. There is a cheaper type of camera a sort of half way house between digital and SLR I think it's called a bridge?.... but not sure if the budget won't stretch all the way to SLR maybe that would be the best bet

Edited to change pic to one with better light and to say this was my first attempt with an SLR and look how well that came out so imagine after a few onths getting used to all the modes and settings how good a pic you could get with an SLR?... can you tell I'm enjoying vicariously spending your money for you!!!

I've got some sort of lumix with a 10 x zoom (I have been known to take piccies of fishies underwater too, and the zoom helps!!) - takes some good pics, none of which i have access to now! I think you just need to make sure you have high shutter speeds so you can get the sharp action shots.... Will try and find photos this eve / check make / model if you're interested.

Thanks, that would be great

Thanks Kerilli and Chloe_GHE for the pms and pics too

Because I'm dense about cameras, what speed is a "fast" shutter speed and what sort of zoom should I be looking for?

Thanks again

Well on a 10 x zoom you get plenty from a distance - agh, it's diff to explain!!! If you PM me an email address I can send some info over this eve (provided I do actually leave the office today.....

Go here www.redbubbble.com/people/lucretia and you can see what I do with my bridge camera. i have no budget at all and have been using a panasonic FZ1s8 (they have got a newer version now but little difference so you could get one from ebay for a couple hundred maybe less) which is fab and very simple to use.
The first few pictures you come to will have been taken with my newer one which if a Fuji S100 which only has a zoom of 14x and is more complicated to use but does give great oictures when I get the focusing and everything right!
