Ive searched and read a few posts about having cameras in trailers. Do ALL the cameras get wired into the lights? (Im not even sure mine HAS an internal light :S And it sounds complicated!!)

Are they easy to set up?

When dad tows me around, I get REALLY panicky, from the second I shut the jockey door to the second he stops the car (I leap out before he can even turn the ignition off, to get to him!) Im constantly trying to look through the window of the trailer to check hes ok!

Definitely want one of these cameras! This one looks good?

I don't know how they are wired in, but my YO has a trailervision one.
I do know she has to have the lights on on the towing vehicle for us to get a picture, but she doesn't have an internal light in the trailer, if that makes sense.

I know what you mean about worrying. She drives, I watch the monitor all the way. Was useful on one journey when her (then) new horse decided to badly bend the head plate she had put in to stop the horses sniping at each other and my poor lad had nowhere to put his bonce. We'd only been on the road 15 minutes of an hour and a half journey!

When I go out with my other friend, I get a bit twitchy because I can't see what's going on behind us.

Reversing camera picks up feed from reversing lights and horse area camera gets feed from sidelight or interior light circuit. Monitor plugs into fag lighter - assuming you are looking at a wireless system

hope that helps ...

We have a trailer vision one that was fitted in our horsebox when we bought it. It is an older bluetooth model but is quite serviceable apart from the odd momentary stutter. I have a WiFi one to fit that we used to monitor an in-foal mare in a stable. this has a better range and more defined image. The monitor end plugs in to a cigarette lighter socket in the cab (we keep it in the glove box) the camera is permanently installed in the box and is powered by the lighting circuit (as others have mentioned) so you do need the vehicle side lights on to get it to work. It is a good system and gives real peace of mind if you cannot see the horse from where you are sitting.

We have a wireless one that just plugs into the cigarette plug in the front with a sat nav looking screen and the cameras are attached where you like. My other half got it from ebay i also panic like you do and its so reassuring to be able to see my horse as we travel.. best bit of kit we've bored i defo reccomend them!

Thanks guys
For those of you that do have them, did you get the cameras fitted by an expert? I don't think even my dad would be able to rewire lighting :S (Could I get a battery operated one maybe? Just put it in the trailer without any wiring??)

I have a trailer vision one, it's completely wireless and you just take the battery that connects to the camera home to charge from the mains. Only problem is sometimes I forget to charge it!
The monitor plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car but can also run from AA battery's, so you could leave the horse in the trailer at a show and take the monitor while you sign in etc.

I would say it's much easier to fit than messing around with wiring, I didn't fit it but it's just been drilled into the trailer and some sealant put around the holes. Hey presto!

That is useful to know! I haven't braved leaving him anywhere before (car stops, I race to get him out and then between me and mum/dad we keep him till we go home, It can be very limiting when we want to go for a drink/burger/results) Anyway, maybe if I can take the monitor with me I might be able to gradually learn to calm down lol

I have an Ifor Williams one, dead easy to use. You can wire it in but I haven't, we just charge up the battery powerpack on the mains then plug it in to the camera in the trailer. The monitor is wireless and powered from the cigarette lighter in the car. No problems and great peace of mind.

Have a look at Ifor Williams camera, so easy to fit and I wouldn't be without it now.
I have one of the ifor cameras and its rubbish i have twice had it fitted by a proffesional 1st time in a new ifor and now in my fab equi-trek the picture go's on and off all the time like its not got enough power but I charge it up everytime i'm begining to think its the connectors that arn't tight enough going into the battery also when I wriggle the connector on the power socket in car as i'm going along it comes back how can i make this connector better the screen is not too great either these cameras are not cheap £299, not worth getting in touch with ifor as they never do anything with anything to do with ifor !!! even though i owned ifor for 20 years I love my equi-trek so much I never thought i would say that !!!! x

Hi Schoolmaster

I had a duff battery when I first got it. If I was you I would take it back and ask for a replacement. I have to say my Ifor Williams camera has been one of my favourite kit I have bought, it gave me the confidence that everything was ok when I started traveling my file for the first time.

Love mine and wouldn't be without it. I have a single trailer so no window to look through at the front so no way of seeing him without the camera. it really does give you peace of mind while travelling. Mines an Ifor williams one, it was already fitted in the trailer when I bought it. It is wired up to the internal light or I can use the battery pack. But I always forget to charge it! So it normally runs off the light. The screen connects into the power socket in my car. It can sometimes get a little fuzzy or jumpie on the picture feed but it still does its job and well worth paying for.

yes mine go's a little jumpi and fuzzy sometime I did change the battery Abbey-Lou but its just the same, thanks.

I have an Ifor one fitted by the dealer and I bought a 2nd camera off the OEM and wired it in myself. So, one for watching horse and one for reversing. Both powered off the trailer interior light which in turn comes off the car sidelights.

Caution on wiring it up yourself is that if your car has Canbus wiring (most modern ones do), a single faulty device can stop the car dead. I know of an Evoque which had a fault on the reversing camera and the whole bus shut down. The driver coasted on to the hard shoulder with just steering and foot break working. She could not even take it out of gear.
