So I’ve had my boy nearly a year now but have been thinking about selling him and would appreciate some advice about how much you think he is worth and what sort of home would be right for him.

He’s a full up 15hh registered Connie gelding, v handsome and well put together, plenty of bone, just turned 8, easy to do, he has a fab sweet temp, the kids brush his legs and lead him to the field, loves fuss but a character too, ie likes to pull your woolly hat off, unzip yr coat etc, can be bit wary of the farrier but fine with haynet, OK to clip with quiet clippers. Was quite nervous and a bit headshy when I first got him but fine now though can be a bit wary of strangers until he gets to know you and he’s not keen on men. Lives in or out, v good doer, fine with other horses, absolutely no vices.

Has hunted/PC stuff in Ireland, has XC schooled jumping Intro fences, he’s a fab, careful jumper, think he would easily affiliate. Hacks alone/company, on his own can be a bit hesitant/looky but think this may be my lack of confidence, in company can get strong/sometimes bucks if there’s 2 or 3 of us having a canter, he’s quite competitive and can bounce a bit if held at the back while the others go off. He’s a bit green on the flat, needs some work on his schooling, though I have a girl who is helping me and she gets him working in a beautiful outline so he can do it but otherwise will tend to go along with a slightly high head carriage.

He’s fine with normal traffic, sometimes can tense up and take a step to the side if a very large lorry goes by but to be fair our yard comes out onto a very busy main road with some huge lorries, it is a 30mph zone and there is a wide grass verge so not as dangerous as it sounds. Not keen on tractors though.

I’m thinking of selling him because he needs bringing and needs someone to take him out and about and have some fun, think will be wasted with me as think he could be out doing PC stuff. I have galloped him in stubble fields and he is VERY fast and loves it, think he would be fab XC/hunting. He’s also a bit small, although he carries me easily I now realise I prefer the longer stride of a larger horse (15.2hh -16hh) although he is deep girthed and a sturdy chap, my friend is 5’10” and he takes up her leg easily. He sometimes feels a bit “ponyish” and wizzy for me, as a teenager I would have loved him but I’m now a 42 year old fart and I really want an older, quieter schoolmaster type that’s been there and got the t-shirt that I can go for long quiet hacks on and maybe do some novice dressage, small jumping etc.

Although pretty sensible and laid back about most things, I wouldn’t say he’s a 1st horse as he takes his confidence from his rider, he also has the typical Connie stubborn streak and can be cheeky sometimes and think he would try it on with a nervous/novice rider. I think a quiet, competent teenager would love him but at the same time don’t want him to go to a whip happy brat or purely a competition home and be jumped to death, was thinking perhaps an experienced PC/hunting home where Mum can help bring him on?

Would really like to see him settled in a long term, family home where he will be loved and cared for as he’s such a sweetie. I hate selling and would ideally hear about someone suitable through word of mouth, I worry that because of his temperament and ability and because he’s a registered Connie – and they seem to be so fashionable at the moment – that someone unscrupulous will buy him masquerading as a private buyer and sell him on for a hefty profit with scant regard for where he is going. This is the bit that keeps me awake at night and has stopped me from selling him thus far.

Though have to say, the thought of looking for a new horse fills me with utter dread and there’s a part of me that thinks better the devil you know. Maybe I should keep him for a bit and continue with his schooling and get a teenager to share him so they could take him out to PC etc?

Ah yes nearly forgot, how much do you think he is worth?

Grovelling apologies for such a LONG post and thanks for reading folks

erm, the horse has no idea he's being "wasted", I'm pretty sure he's not standing in his stable cursing you out of it for ruining his potential! If you like him and he suits you then keep him!

My horse was jumping clears at 1.10m as a 5y/o but I'm not using him as a showjumper (he's 7 now) and I'm not bothering about "wasting" him :D

I know what you are going through, i sold the roan horse (Ted) in my siggy bacause he loved jumping and was very talented and i felt awful cause i only got him out a few times a year to competitions. I advertised him and 3 people came to see him the first weekend and all 3 offered the full asking price, i picked what i thought was the best home for him and let him go. 3 months later i heard from the lady that bought him and he had done very little as she was now pregnant ( was when she bought him!) She has since sold him on and wont answer my calls i just hope he has now gone to a good home.
I have never mastered the fine art of turning back time but i really wish i had kept him.
Would it not be possible to get a sharer to compete him then you can enjoy him and so can they.
Not much help i know but i had to share.
Teresa.

I second teresagarsden!! Can you get a sharer? There would be plenty of teenagers/young adults who would love to have a horse to compete on, but don't have the time/money to have there own!! I know I would love something like that!!
I would advertise him as a share and see what response you get!!
Good luck!!

sounds like you feel you are a little bit overhorsed. Is it possible that you could get some lessons with him to help boost your confidence in him a bit? Failing that then perhaps you could get someone in to school him and hack him out on his own for you.I'm not sure you should sell him just yet as it sounds like you are fond of him and after having had him for a year I'm sure things can't be that bad as you have stuck by him that long.

Teresagarsden I have sent you a pm regarding your roan horse

The way that i would look at this how much will you get for the horse? In ireland connies have gone down to half nothing compared to what they were.. How much will it cost you to replace the horse and how many trails and trips will you have make before you find the right horse. Would u not consider putting the horse on half loan therefore you can benifit from the school work ect, the horse will benifit and the other person will benifit...
