Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me, I've been looking to buy a 4x4 to pull a trailer for the last 6 months but am struggling to find one to suit what I need. I am 21 and don't particularly want to buy a huge 4x4 such as a Kia, and can't even afford something like the disco. I do like the defender but is awful for commercial driving and I sometimes have to commute. The only cars that seem to be on the market are the jeep Cherokee and the mitsubishi shogun 3 door that are small, comfortable and won't break the bank. [still will clean my bank out!] however I haven't heard many people talk about the shogun 3 door or even seen one pulling? Any input would be really appreciated! Thanks!!

Yes, very well. I have one and it easily pulls a trailer with one horse on, I haven't done it with two but doubt it'll break a sweat. It has a tow capacity of 2.5 ton.

Yes, easily- they are rated for 3.3 or 3.5 tonnes I can't remember off hand which, but they are thirsty beasts, especially the automatics.

Yes the Shogun is a proper towing car, mine is ancient but still going strong. I tow an Equitrek & one 14.2 pony & are well within the weight limits. It goes through deep snow, mud, all terrains & when he dies I will definitely get another one.

I posted last week asking about advice on which smaller 4x4 to buy as our Daihatsu Fourtrak passed away! Everyone was very helpful and in the end we bought a three door mitsubishi shogun. So far it's been great! My husband is using it to get to work and he says it's very nippy and seems so far to not be too heavy on diesel. We've only towed once so far with just my 16.1hh in the trailer but it was a breeze. And I wouldn't hesitate to tow both my horses next time. We're very pleased with it.

Yip, Ive got a 3dr Shogun (NOT the Pinin, as these can't tow much of anything!) and it tows great. I have an IW511 and 16hh DWB & 15.2 TB no issues. Mine is also an auto which makes towing even easier :)

Wow! Posted this not imagining I'd have so much fab feedback! Has really helped. Been erming and arrring on what vehicle to get for ages. Was also considering the freelander but seemed to get slated! Seems like I may have found the one!! Thanks again everyone! Really appreciate it =D.

Definitely yes. My O/H has a 4x4 which is really good to tow with but if we ever have two horses in the trailer we always borrow the Shogun from his work. We even had to collect a horse from the vets this winter in bad snow and used it for that. Very impressed. People were stuck in cars even 4x4's yet we towed our trailer no problem. Not recommended but we didn't have a lot of choice and a fab testof how good they are.

The short wheel base Shoguns are very common and popular for towing.

You just need to check how much it can tow (which is still a good amount)
How heavy your trailer is and the horses plus tack etc.
