My OH's aunt has expressed a desire to learn to ride, but as she is retired and suffers quite badly from arthritis she is under the impression that she will only be able to ride side saddle.

Would ths be much gentler on her joints?

And is it possible to start off side saddle without learning astride first?

If so, does anyone know anywhere in Sussex where this can be done?

Yes, as Amy May says Ladies had to do so previously. I would start by looking at the Sidesaddle website. They can give you pointers of instuctors with horses/schools etc that are able to cater.

these are the sussex contact details for the SSA
