I was looking at a horse for sale and according to the owner he has been 'banned' from racing because he was too slow and he has a stamp in his weatherbys passport.
I have never heard of this???
Thanks.

I don't think so.... They can be banned if they won't go in a starting stalls I think, they need to pass a stalls test to enter again. Sounds like maybe they are telling pork pies...? You can look the horse up on racingpost.com and see its previous form, might tell you if it was banned...

I think a horse is banned if it fails to finish 5 times in a row. So if it is really slow and gets tailed off and pulled up then I suppose it could be banned.

I would of said no, but agree about the stalls test.
orangehorse i didnt know that. Although now you mention it i believe it could be true as im sure it cant go obn like that forever can it?!
What is the horses race name?

I've never come across that in National Hunt or Flat - although we've bought a few that have been deemed to be too slow by their owners in the past to sell on once they've been reschooled :D
A horse can be suspended from running for 40 days by the Stewards http://newrules.britishhorseracing.com/Penalties but I can't find anything about banning for being too slow... this is going to bug me :D
In harness racing a horse has to be able to safely pace a mile in under 2minutes 20seconds on a grass track to be eligible to race (although races do sometimes run slower than this especially in the wet), and we have qualifying races at most meetings before the proper racing starts for young horses and novice drivers to take part in (drivers have to take a driving test & qualify too!)

no, but as people have said they can be banned for causing trouble when loading into stalls, they then have to past a 'test' on racecourse stalls before they can race again.
what does the stamp actually say? i think its more likely to be this, does the horse load on a box well, if not that might give you a clue?

Horses can be banned for stalls problems(not just not loading). First 2 times they can take a test, 3rd time they get banned for 6 months until they can be re-tested.
Over jumps horses that refuse to start, or play up before hand get reported to the BHA, and are banned for life at their discretion.
The horse in question may have a non racing agreement, which was put into place by the owner when retired from racing.

I am not 100% sure about that, although I must have read it somewhere. I suppose if a horse keeps falling and failing to finish then what is the point of keep trying. Once or twice might be unfortunate, but 5 times means it can't jump.

It sounds like she means a non racing agreement - when racehorses are retired they are often sold or given away under the non racing agreement. The passport would be stamped - The agreement means the horse is no longer allowed to run in any race including P2P's.
