He has been turned out to grass since about 8am this morning, we have about 2" of snow on the ground and it is -2. He has got hay in the field but prefers snuffling for grass.

I brought him in about 40 mins ago and have given him a feed, haynet and bucket of water but he isn't interested in any of them. The feed was made up of Dengie, warm beetpulp and pasture mix. He ate a small amount of this.

He is stood in his stable scraping the floor, his head hanging low, he keeps wrinkling his top lip up (like they do when something tastes funny) and he keeps crossing his jaw over. He isn't showing any signs of colic.

Do you think his nose had got very cold and now he has got hot aches in it?!

All the above are signs of mild colic. Eating frozen grass can cause colic.

Totally agree. Don't know why they aren't ever stated in books describing colic symptoms. I've seen more cases with these symptoms than the ones who roll.

I agree with the above posters about it being symptoms of colic. It's one of the reasons i'm not letting my horses in the field at the moment as one had colic last week and i don't want to chance another bout of it.

Thanks for your replies :)

He began to eat after about an hour and looked much happier. He is a bit of a piglet and so probably had eaten a lot of frozen grass (even though he had a lovely pile of hay!).

Silverfire- don't remember him coughing. But it was v mild & with help from staff at yard (whose horse used 2 b a regular choker!)

Soz fone posted b4 finished!
Managed 2 clear the blockage himself/ with us massaging throat

I'd never seen choke b4 so just assumed colic
