can a horse 'stop' malting?

that pretty much says it.

if a horse has started malting and then it gets cold, does it stop malting? or is it past the point of no return?

just wondering really, don't want to clip with snow on the way but he's starting to malt!

As I understand it moulting is related to the hours of daylight and not to the temperature but I'm willing to be corrected

dwi is absolutely correct! Moulting is related to daylight length as is a mare's seasons.

The replies are 100% correct. People do try and slow it down by reducing rugs, I personally dont know if that works.

Hmm, now whilst in theory I agree, daylight hours etc, both of mine noticably stop and start. Last week big hairy unclipped ID started moulting determindly, then he was out on Tuesday when it went soooo cold

, and not a hair could be plucked out. So I popped a rug on yesterday and last night - and bobs your uncle - we are moulting with a vengeance again....

It is the daylight hours that influence moulting but horses can start and stop moulting during periods of warm/cold weather. Mine started moulting as soon as the days started drawing out again but stopped recently due to the cold spell.

Yes you can - take away its barley.... I'll have no horse of mine experimenting with home brew!

Seriously though if you rug up you can make the coat thinner, but you cannot stop the change of coat. Obviously when it does change there is less hair.
