Ok so i know the average is about 12ft X 12ft but my stable is massive! I think its about 18 - 20 ft square!

The reason I ask is because i have had a few people comment on how much too big the stable is!!??
Its not as though I use anymore bedding that anyone else as he only has half the stable bedded down!

What are your personal opinions?

That looks lovely! You might lose a pony in it but for a 17hh I think he's a very lucky boy.

The stables at our place are 12x11 - perfect for my 14.2hh, but my friend's 17hh TB couldn't turn around in his. She's thankfully moved elsewhere now!

My 16.2 was in a standard 12 x 12 box. I moved her into the corner box which is quite a bit bigger, she likes to lay down a lot, so I thought it would be nicer for her.

Personally, I would bed the whole of that stable floor, it makes it a bit more difficult for you to muck out, but most horses wee in the same place, so its not a big deal.

We have a 30ft x 12ft stables and they only have a 1/4 bed down as the stables are so massive, great if you have to have a horse on box rest and easy to muck out as they mostly poo on the concrete and get to stand on a dry flat surface instead of on their own poo and uneaven bedding.

You can never have too big. My 16.3 has half a barn at the mo, its about 15' x 60'!! (Only temporary while the new stables are being built) last year he was in the old miking parlour which is about 20' x 25', the 16hh stallion is in there now and still manages to trash it!! But they are both really content

Only thing I would say is that I would bed the whole floor, either that or put rubber mats down at the door and where he stands to eat his hay, so he's not standing on hard concrete for long periods of time and so he doesn't slip!!

As I;m not using them at the moment mine are in the foaling boxes, which they love! so i think bigger is definatley best if you are lucky enough to have it

i dont think a stable could ever be too big, the more room for them to move around the better i say, with a nice comfy bed fitted in there somewhere, my girl is lucky and has a very large stable too with two windows, plus the stable door to look out of, though i only stable her for short periods of about 4hrs a day

as above, the bigger the better. 2 of my stables are 15' x 15' and the horses are very happy in them. i hate seeing horses in poky stuffy little stables, and i think they're much more likely to get cast in small stables.

My mare has a 15' square stable. She is 16.2 and tbh I wouldn't want to put her in anything smaller now. She has a nice bit of room to move about. I'm sure the size of the stable contributes to her being so clean. I bed it down with banks and just leaving a 3 ' square at the door. It took a bit to fill it the first time, but I only put in 1 - 2 bales of straw a week. She is amazingly clean. No mixing up, just all droppings in the back left hand corner and wee in the back right. When I arrive in the morning you wouldn't believe she had been in there 12 hours! I put this down to her having plenty of room. Would gladly have something bigger though!
