This morning my 18yo to gelding was in his stable as normal when the bin lorry pulled in to the yard, he got a bit stressed and started nodding his head then I noticed a tiny trickle of blood from one nostril. Was it just coincidence or could it have been caused by stress?

I rang the vets after it happened and fortunately one of the horse vets was in and he said that it didn't sound as if it needed urgent attention but they would see him next week and if necessary we could take him and get him scoped. I was just wondering if anyone else had experience of nosebleeds and what might cause them.

Nosebleeds have all sorts of causes - many harmless. Our ISH came in from hacking the other day with a low grade bi lateral nosebleed which stopped within 10 minutes. I did wonder about EIPH but he's not done it before or since. On chatting with the vet last week they speculated that he might have come into contact with oak moth caterpillars (we have quite a few in the woods) and inhaled some of the hairs. Apparently they've seen a few of these recently.
