I am new to this but would really appreciate anyones advice. My wonderful eventer has had a low white blood cell count, resulting in lethargy since the end of November and we are slowly tearing our hair out on how to raise it and get him feeling 100%. The vet is suggesting that he has equine fatigue syndrome with a white blood cell count reading an average of 4. He has been blood tested every 4 weeks, with tests done at the Animal Health Trust to check that everything is work, which it is. He has had a very quiet last 6 weeks, with quiet walks out to keep him sane. If anyone has had any experience of this or any ideas I would be so grateful.

He is feed twice daily and because of the low level of work he is in and we don't want he injurying himself he is fed the following twice daily
One full scoop - HiFi Light
Half scoop - Saracens Cooling pencils
Half scoop - Saracens Maintenance Pencils
25mls daily - Immunial tonic
Supplements - Cortaflex, multivitamins, garlic

My friends eventer was diagnosed with suspected ulcers, which caused a low blood count and anaemia. Like your horse, she had very little energy, and always seemed tired.

After changing her routine significantly she has never had a repeat of the problem during the last 18 months.

She is fed on a high fibre diet of:

Alfa A, Slow release energy Cubes, Oil, and a muscle suppliment (the name of which I can't remember). She also has access to either grazing or hay 24/7. The later only being removed 1 hour before competition.

She is very carefully managed to ensure that no starch in the form of cerials or suppliments are fed and she is also never given sugar beat.

Not sure if this is any help, but given the similar symptoms it may be of use.

My 23 yr old TB had anaemia at the start of last year.

I rested him for 2 months and put him on Red Cell supplement upon recommendation of someone on here.

It definitely sorted him out & he was fresh as paint when he came back into work.

I now keep him on the Red Cell permanently.

My friends horse has exactly the same symptoms, bloods tested by Rossdales and just showed low white blood cell count but nothing else. She started him on Aloe Vera Juice and he is now improving. Could just be that he was getting better anyway, but we don't think so.

I had heard about this Aloe Vera Juice....definitely worth a try, anything to try and improve him. Thank you so much for all your advice, just a matter of time will tell and keeping my fingers very much crossed.
