Looking over Shadow's vet info and wondered if anyone could give me an exact interpretation of a comment that was written in his referral report when he was diagnosed with Navicular
"Xrays revealed decreased corticomedalary differentiation in both left and right navicular bones"
I've read a lot on Navicular but don't seem to be able to really get the exact nature of what they've said.

He's up for his second day of MRI scanning now and I want to get as much background info as possible for when the results come in, so that I know what I'm discussing with the vet.

He's also being scanned for his suspensory and check ligaments in his near fore as he came in lame 2 weeks ago.
He's also being scanned on his near hind as he got cast whilst he was in on box rest (and put a hoof through the back of our lovely new wooden stable) and appears to have done something to his fetlock or the structures around it!

If being able to injure yourself was a sport, my boy would be a gold medalist

Right I am not a vet but I am sure that it means that there is less cartiledge which cusions and separates two bones than there should be. Or that the cartiledge is disformed (if thats a worked) Because of the lack of cartiledge separating the bones, the bones rub together which is painful for the horse and it change the shape of the bones. I think this relates to cortaflex and cortisone injections, they all help in this type of thing I tink???

I think you are right about it being a deformity. Ive only come across this terminology in relation to renal failure but can remember my stepbrothers kidney scans being described as fuzzy and distorted prior to his transplant.

It is definately not about cartilage. Its about the bone - I'd of said its about the bone density (navicular is a condition where bone is resorbed more than it is formed - the balance between breakdown and formation is disturbed). Phone the vet who wrote the report to make sure that you understand what they are saying (that's what you are paying for).
