Literally just happened, I'm sat sprawled on the sofa with the iPad. Dog is laid next to me. She awoke suddenly and started warily sniffing my left leg. Very cautious she moved away from it and had all the hairs on her neck raised. I moved my leg and she literally back flipped off the sofa then did very high pitched worried barks at my leg!! So now I'm sat on the sofa and ruby is running round the living room sniffing and occasionally approaches the sofa nervously looking at my leg. Tried to get up and go to her but apparently I'm too scary and she runs off. What the hell is for going on? Been wearing the same jodhpurs that I always wear. Bit weirded out to be honest! Bf said she might have just imagined something that isn't there

Maybe a passed pet came to wish you a merry xmas and she was concerned by their presence, they pick up on more than we do, as odd as it seems, try give her a fuss tell her its all ok xx

A behaviour pattern is triggered by some sort of stimulus.

Dog sees a running rabbit and is stimulated by instinct to chase.

For some unknown reason, your dog's behaviour was triggered "by something". Probably some odour it detected on your leg. It is probable that some odours are similar. So the scent, whatever it was, seemed like something scary to the dog. Even dogs can make mistakes!

You see what you think is a snake and recoil in fear as a natural reaction. But the "snake" is actually a twisted piece of tree root. That doesn't make you any less frightened -- until you realise your mistake!

Thanks for posting! I love this sort of thing!

Maybe she dreamt something, and hadn't quite fully switched over to being awake, when she awoke (if that makes sense), became scared from mixing up dream with reality, and is now confused because she doesn't understand what it was that scared her?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!! I reassured her and she still wouldn't settle in the living room but she's asleep in her basket in my room now. Maybe as Zero said our old border terrier came in to say hi. Don't believe in any of that but nice to muse. Merry Christmas!
