So I’m just wondering if anyone can tell me how on earth you manage to find an OH when you have horses and dogs and a full time job?

I've been single for about 2 years now after a long term (6 years if that’s called long term) relationship that started when I was just finishing my A levels - so was very young to settle down.

I've been quite happy as a singleton for a while - however I am now surrounded by 'settled down' friends getting married and having babies (not something I’m in any particular rush to do by the way!) so have thought it might be nice to have a new relationship - however - when on earth does anyone with horses (on DIY) ever find the time to meet anyone, and where do all the eligable single men go - do they all hide together? I did try the online thing - but to be honest after a few dates with either very dull or completely 'wrong for me' types I gave up (there was one person I met and had an ok time with for a couple of months, but he just couldn’t get that I would get up at the crack of dawn - even on a weekend - in the winter - to look after my horse/walk the dog - so it really wasn’t going to work - also (and this is going to sound really bad) he wasn’t really intelligent enough for me either!)

So come on - how on earth do I meet Mr Right?
Essential attributes:
Tall (I'm 5'10" and have a selection of lovely heeled shoes - he needs to be taller than me so I can wear them and not feel like a freak of nature giant!)
Sense of humour a must (and he'll need to get sarcasm to get on with me!)
Educated
Ambitious
Happy to muck in (and muck out!) with the animals
Understand that I’ve got a hobby that does take up a lot of my time, and I am independent!!

Nice to haves
A good cook - I’m not and I don’t enjoy it
A 4X4 that could pull a trailer...
Maybe a rugby player physique...
Lots of money (or family money would be fine)
House abroad
his own hobby (so long as its something i can enjoy watching - like rugby etc - not call of duty on the playstation!)

So come on - where do i need to start hanging around - i'm not desperate or anything - honest!

i really dont know pet!!!
I've been looking for one of them too (not actively as im too busy lol)
but if you find one and he has a brother, please send him my way!!!!

Hmmm, so you're working full time, have horses on DIY and you're picky ?
Nope. You are destined to be a mad old horse lady.

You could lower your sights a bit. Give up work and have rich OH to pay for horses- or your could have a home loving, x-box addicted slob who needs his giro picking up on your way back from the yard.

Well, all i can say is... Farrier, :P i have one of my own! Well an apprentice farrier, been together for a year now and its brilliant!

Strong, smart, good with horses, usually drives a 4X4, sometimes tall (mine's 6'5ft!), always up early.. ideal?

:P good luck!

hmmm - think i could cope with being a mad old horse lady (although I hope i've got a while before i'm called old!!)

nah - wont be lowering my sights - I'm not really that bothered - i was just wondering if there's a special place this type of man hangs out - to make it nice and easy - shooting fish in a barrel type situation would be good! i have found in my local area - they just dont exist at all (and i work in a building of over 1000 people!!)

Hmm - i'll just surround myself with animals and be the woman all the kids dare each other to knock on my door!!

SpottyTB - the farriers in my area are all married or fall into the 'not for me' group - and i have checked as many of them out as i can!! (although that does sound a bit wierd!)

Young farmers? Do they still have the YFA? I always found farmers such a laugh to be around (no, I'm not being sarcastic). They work hard, like animals and usually get up early too. Where do young farmers hang out (oh erh)!

I met my OH through horses and we both have dogs, now been together 6 years and getting married in May.

You will meet your Mr Right when you least expect it x

Just thought other country sports? Such as shooting... I shoot clays there are lots of men that shoot! (and women!)

Young Farmers and real country pubs in the evenings, Real as in Actual pubs in the countryside not pretend ones masquerading in the commuter belt! Some of the DIY ers could go together or one or 2 of your 'settled' friends are probably desperate for a night away from OH by now!!

millreef - good thinking - i did go to the odd YFA Ball when i was at Uni - they were generally carnage from what i remember - but a lot of fun - however at the age i'm looking at now (I'm 27) - I dont know if they can be a member of 'young' farmers? - is there a 'heading for their 30's Farmers association?'

But you're right - they have most of the requirements automatically - gentleman farmer would be even better!!

I met mine on a dating site! ha.

Been together nearly 3 yrs, in which time he has brought me a horse and a lorry. He's rather fab. Wasn't horsey to start with, but now rides occasionally. When my car was being fixed he got up an hour earlier each day to take me to the yard, helps me poo pick the field, video's me schooling, takes me to competitions.

Yeah, he's perfect :D

bexcy-bee x

spotsrock - country pubs dont really exist round here any more - every other saturday me and a group of my dwindling singleton friends do go out to our local market town to the last remaining 'country pub' (where the country types hang out, they have their own rugby club and an annual boxing day hunt meet in the square) - have we ever seen even a flash of a young(ish) single eligable 'hottie'? not even a whiff!
Like i say - i'm starting to wonder if they even exist!!

I know that your post is tongue in cheek but as people get older most of them become less picky. Whereas in your 20s you have a long list of must haves and desirables by the time you get to your 40s your list will probably be something like mine:

Not a murderer/rapist/child molester/wife beater
Has own teeth
:)

Oh¬!! has to be your age??? Mine's 9 years younger than me so I am training him how I want him, was going well till his boss added mucking out the horses to his daily tasks.

spotsrock - doesnt have to be my age no - never really thought of a toyboy - although my brother is 5 years younger than me and very immature - so he would need to be mature for his age!!

Mine wasn't much longer in my mid thirties lol :D

Found mine by accident, an old friend who came to stay with me while he was working and it went from there ;) He's only 2 inches taller than me, muscles and a few months younger than me and has a boy of 10, was scared of horses (now riding horses) and isn't ever what I would had on my list but we have a great laugh and he understands the whole horse thing :D

Was a determined singleton at the time so wasn't looking which I think might have helped?

martlin - hmmm - good thinking - will have to drag my friends up to the local club - sure we can find an excuse to go - i do scrub up quite well when i actually make an effort...

I'm thinking about going to watch at the local Polo club this summer - maybe there'll be a rich polo pony owner there that fits the other requirements!!

Pull something vaguely clean out of your washing pile, of course making sure it passes the sniff test, sort of fluff up your hair, stick on some sort of that make up stuff and get out on the town with your girly mates single or not. That's what I did new years eve 2009 and a year down the line I still have my man, tall (I'm also 5'10), rugbyish physique, who is being trained to understand the way of a mad horsewomen, his training is going very well :-)

Don't give up hope, I'd been single for *ages* before I met him and had all but resigned myself to being a single mad cat/horse lady forever more!

Ooh Ooh,I know. Can I have another go ?

How about lunch time drinks at a bistro/wine bar next to the county courts ? Pick yourself up a nice barrister.
Do look at his shoes though, wouldn't want you to pick up a con by accident.

Horserider - best answer yet, although you can pretty much guarantee all the good looking ones will be th cons!!

Met mine through internet personals.

He'd never even touched a horse before he met me. Now he will change rugs and turn out/bring in if I need it. Haven't persuaded him to ride or muck out yet!

Edited to add that we have been married for nearly 8 years.

If there was anyone like that about you'll probably have to join the queue! But seriously, my oh is into country sports and I met him in a local bar one night (still wearing my rather smelly clothes), he's non horsey but has recently taken up metal detecting, its brilliant! He gets to wander around the farm finding horse shoes and I can ride without worrying that he'll be sat outside the stable with a face like a smacked bum!

At first I thought that you had posted your thread a day early (think about it!) - awh sorry. Have read this out to my OH (we've been together 18 years but not married) because I was laughing out loud - he says get yourself invited to some weddings - have you not seen "Four weddings and a funeral"? Basically they all copped-off at wedding receptions.
He ticks some of your boxes (tall, has 2 4x4s, loves his dog, has his own hobby), but has run out of money due to me and my horses! His hobby is shooting - this is good as it gives him something to do when I am out all hours enjoying the spring 'lighter' evenings poo-picking etc... Periodically he has a moan about 'them' coming before him, and sometimes I wish I was single and able to please myself - we are never happy with what we have (I want curly hair too) - I wish you luck.
BTW Young Farmers are up to 26 (the OH used to be one).
I had a friend once that lived in the wilds of Devon, went up to London and met her fella in a bar up there (intentionally), and all her dreams came true - marriage, the country house, the land, the horses, the dogs etc etc. So some have a fairy tale ending. :)

Well I've read through all the posts and had much amusement - i'm not really desperate to find a man, and this post was really just a bit of fun - however i may well be dragging my friends around various different places on a 'man hunt' as we move into the summer - maybe Mr Right will be waiting for me! Thanks everyone!

If you have any more ideas keep them coming though!! :)
