Hi everyone! :). Can anyone help?. I have a Welsh D X TB, 5 years old, mare, i ride her in just a plain loose ring lozenge snaffle, When i ask for canter she shoots off into a bolt sort of thing, she has had her back, teeth and saddle checked (everything ok.) She is fully clipped, up to date with everything, when i half halt her she tends to leap into the air and go faster and just ignore me completly? So i have to just use my voice to slow her down and seat for ages until she comes back to me, She has been doing this for just over a month now. It's always when you ask for canter, What could this be? is it her age? change of weather? or is it her just being moody? I have had her since she was 2 and backed her myself, If anyone can give me any advise that'll be great, thankyou :)

sounds like a balance issue and not a bolt. Sec D’s are notorious for having canters that are hard to develop. She will probably be leaping into canter and leaning for balance and getting faster and faster. Ive been there:p Best recommendation is to get a good RI who can help you and just keep working on it. It will come with time.

This is very difficult to answer without the bigger picture. How long have you had her? What environment do you ride in? Eg with others, field, school? Even though you have had her checked there could be some underlying cause. Some ideas though
1. Could be an underlying cause
2. Could be stomach ulcers
3. Unbalanced
4 maybe work on transitions and poles to balance horse more.
5. What are her other paces like?

Sorry no answers but ideas to think about.

Thankyou! :) will have to keep at it then. She has canterd perfectly before this though, its just recently could she of still just lost her balance again?

What does she do on the lunge, when lunged in a bridle and when using a cavasson? That will tell you if its you or weight/balance or if its teeth or behavioral.

Hi silver polox: i work her in a indoor school and also outdoor too, i have rode her with others and without, i have had her since she was 2 and now is 5, and ok thankyou will have to look more into it :).

has anything changed in her routine? feed etc? what was she like before this started? They often go through a bit of a phase around that age. does she act that way in company?

ella19: i have lunged her on the lunge with the bridle and she doesnt shoot off when i ask for canter but she does tilt her head inwards, thats when we got the dentist out and the dentist couldnt see anything.

mmm, i wouldnt have thought so unless she has had some time off or has drastically changed shape recently/taken a growth spurt.

i would reiterate, get an experienced RI to look at you both if everything else has been checked. :)

Effycoresten: No cant think of anything that has changed in her routine. She seemed perfectly fine before all this happend, she does it in company and when shes alone. This is why i just worried incase she is in pain or its because its her age and shes going through a phase..

NeverSeenSanta: Thankyou for your advisE :). She had 6 months of from the start of january to July time, as she was in the vets trying to cure her eye that had a bad infection in it nearly lost it but thankfully the infection went and didnt have to remove the eye, But brought her back into work when she was ok too and she was perfectly fine, but from the past 1 month or 2 she has done a drastically taken a growth spurt, so many well be that. Thankyou for your help :)
