Just wondering wether or not to go affiliated dressage with my youngster.

If I do what do I have to register - both me and the horse? can you give me any advise about doing so and if its worth it

You can compete in prelim classes without registering either you or your horse. You automatically enter the open section. You can also compete in Novice classes and above on a ticket which you can either purchase direct from BD or selected saddlers. You then pay the cost of entry and send your ticket with your entry. Generally affiliated competitions are quieter and warm-up and competition are always on a surface. However few places offer somewhere to lunge first.
Good luck

I didnt know you compete affiliated prelim without registering! Wohoo - baby is only 4 but after the recent show antics i want to get her out and about to as many competitions to see if we can calm her down a bit.
I tried to have a good look on the BD website but some of the pages werent working. I managed to download both application forms but havent really had time to have a good look through them.
Im not too bothered about being able to lunge her but somewhere quiet ish to warm up would be very nice - much nicer than the first time I took her to unaff dressage. I went to a lovely quiet part of the huge arena to walk her around then calmer work her in - everybody seemed to make a beeline for me and when she started paddying and threatening to rear and pounce they all had a go at me ***hello who came to who?****
Shes laods better now but just wont stand still for very long in public so thought dressage would be good for her.

the only affiliated dressage comp I went to the warm up was horrible. I couldnt warm my horse up in a circle, as soon as I tried some selfish g*t canter across my path, not looking where they were going, or cut me up. shame my horse didnt kick them, they wouldnt have done it again!

i`ve ridden with affilated DR people before at one venue and i hated it!!

they were so bloody rude, coming too close, cutting in front of me etc. i know they have got to warm up but a bit of common sense and politeness would have been nice!!

How odd - I compete both affil and unaffil and find that the warm up in affil is much quieter, calmer and more civilized - I suspect it is because people take their youngsters to unaffil so the warm up tends to be a bit wilder!

ECW you can enter an affil now as a prelim open rider (providing they have an open class). Just fill in the form and post it off. The same judge is used for both sections so you will be able to see from the scoring where you would have come if you had ridden as a restricted rider.

If things look pretty promising you can join as a member and ride in the restricted class. You dont need to join your horse unless you want to do novice classes as you are not allowed to ride a horse which is not registered with BD in nov.

If your horse ends up being a star and you qualify for the prelim regional champs you need to register your horse to ride at them otherwise it is not worth doing.

By the way....ALL BD rules are just as confusing...good luck

thanks for all the Sparklet - it is very confusing isnt it - why cant it be black and white with what you have to do and what you dont do??

I think she has lots of potential and has something special. I took her to her first unaff dressage after about 2 months of her being brought back into work (after being turned away all winter after backing) and she scored 63.5% and she jumped out of the arena. She has lovely paces and certainly has the ability to go far in dressage (if only mother could get on with it!LOL - yes thats me!)

I would like to start her off in the prelim and do as much as I can with her so maybe I should register her then I can do whatever classes I wish without the worry of not having her registered?

ow my brain hurts now with the confusion

Well I can highly recommend it - the judges are trained and are on the whole (with the odd exception) much more consistent.

On the plus side you get a copy of your own rule book with your membership pack which makes excellent bed-time reading. It is worth putting it in a safe place because you have no idea how often you need to look up another bizarre rule....there are so many 'you can do this but not in this scenario' rules that you need to keep it close by.

Good luck and keep us posted in the competition section on how you are progressing. I joined last Aug and despite my pessimism qualified and competed in the winter regs and have qualified for the summer regs too. Makes you feel like a 'proper' rider
