I have just taken rent of a lovely paddock and stables, but there is no electric.

I dare not use a generator, because in my area they get pinched!! Does anyone have other solutions on how I could rig some lighting up?

Anyone out there using solar? any advice would be much appreciated.

I'm in the same position as you and I bought a couple of rechargeable fluorescent lanterns. Allegedly they last for 7 hours on one charge but I've found they last a lot longer than that and they put out as much light as a 60 watt bulb. I think they were something like £9.99 each. I got them in a local hardware shop.

Thats an excellent start. I am currently trawling the net and looking at solar, which is expensive and I am worried about it being stolen. I have a latern that you mentioned and they are very good. I suppose for £30, I would be set up.

If there are any more ideas out there or experiences I would like to hear every option going.

Many thanks

I use an inverter, they come in varius sizes from 50 watts upwards, basically you put a car battery on one end and you get mains power out the other end, my inverter is 1000 watts and cost about £100, I can power all my hand tools or have two 500 watt halogen lights working at the field, you could even have it mounted in your car so you pull up at the stables and simply plug a standard extension lead in and have instant power.

Go and have a nosey in your local caravan shop, they have lots of 12v lighting stuff and batteries. I have a 12v inspection lamp (really bright) and a 12v strip light and just take the batteries home to charge until we get electric. We do have a big generator locked away but I can't start the bloomin thing!!!

Would it not be worth getting a generator and locking it away? What about when the blacksmith comes?, or if you need to use any power tools?

Oh, and those small gas lamps are really bright too, find out which is best for you, then get on ebay!!

Hi, I know a yard where they dug a hole and put the generator under ground with the exhaust coming out of a pipe, then hidden with a board over it. It is bolted to a thin pad of concrete too. Hasn't been found yet, let alone pinched!
