Hi!
I am a 3rd year Equine Dental Science student at Hartpury college.
This year I am required to do a dissertation.
My dissertation is titled:
The effect of dental maintenance on faecal fibre length in horses.
To enable efficient digestion of the diet a horse must be able to chew long stem fibre and reduce its length. Preliminary observations suggest that dentition in malocclusion (pre maintenance) is less efficient at reducing fibre length, than when in alignment (post maintenance). The aim of this project is to establish the amplitude of this difference, and to examine if it varies according to the severity of the malocclusion present.
I was wondering if anyone may be kind enough to participate in my study? We are looking for around 50 horses, hopefully horses that have dental abnormalities or have not been seen regularly (as we would like to study the more serious dental malocclusion's.....not just a few sharp points! Although we will take into account some regular dental patients in order to make the study more applicable to the equine industry).
The aim is to arrive with the Equine Dental Technician, collect a faecal sample, the EDT will carry out the dental treatment whilst the researcher fills out the dental chart. the Researcher will need to come back in 2 weeks to collect another faecal sample.
Participants will remain anonymous, and information given will be used for research purposes only. The participant can withdraw from the study at any time.
I am based in South Wales, however another girl i am working with is based in Somerset/ Gloucester. So any one who's planning on having their horses teeth done with an EDT please get in touch!
