Hi there guys,

Lurker for quite a while but never really had a reason to post until now.

I'm currently doing an equine course, and for one of my research projects I need to look at and write about different horses feet. I don't really want to go visit a riding school, as I expect a majority of the horses are going to have pretty 'standard' feet. I've also been in contact with a few charities but nothing ever got arranged and I don't want to keep pestering them..

I want to get the most out of this course as I can, so I'd love to see huge feet, tiny feet, remedial shoeing, barefeet, and anything and everything else possible.
If anyone at all can help with photos of the fronts and/or undersides (or any other interesting photos!) just for me to use in my own personal coursework (it won't be shared/displayed anyerhre else) it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you! :)

I suspect that you can get a wide variety of other people's pics and experiences on here, however, you will get more recognition from your tutor for getting out there and actually going and seeing... It's one thing to sit behind a desk and another to actually experience... My recommendation would be to contact some farriers in your area, explain your project and see if you can shadow some of their more interesting cases

I have 2 horses with very interesting feet in that they have similar defects and both horses are related quite happy to email you some pictures it's whatever your after.

I would agree with going out and seeing feet in person being of more value to you. If you have a local riding school the that may well be very interesting, as they will probably use one farrier, and you may see similarities. If any feet are wildly different despite the same hoof care then that is interesting too, and can be related to conformation. Visiting when they have a farrier present would be great, as when asked correctly many are happy to impart information. Bottle of whisky may be the correct way to ask!

There is also a lot of info on the Barefoot site on Facebook, and I have loads of photos of 16hh Ch gelding, Selle Francaise X Irish sport, who was barefiit for 18 months on my photobox account http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/red-12/library/?sort=3&page=1 which you are welcome to use. There are pictures fro first removal to 18 months on. His feet were fairly decent to start with.

Thank you all very much for your help. I agree completely that it's best to go out and see it all in person, but I'm really at a loss of how to do it. I've seen plenty of 'normal' feet, and I really want to see some of the bigger problems out there, just to get an idea of what else can happen.
The problem is where I live, there are few riding schools, and they're mostly quite small, with no real demonstrations etc.
My and my partner also both work 50+ hours a week, on opposite shifts, as we have two children and no childcare, so it can be an absolute nightmare trying to organise things sometimes!
I don't know wether to email the charity I was in contact with back, as they seemed really interested and happy for me to come over, but I don't want to be pestering them.

I'm not sure why you think most riding school horses will have "standard" feet. But equally you are probably right that there will not be anything wildly unusual or requiring too specialist management.

QueenBee is right about tagging along with a farrier. If you look at the FRC website see if you can locate a training farrier in your area. They are likely to have the widest range of cases you could visit and they are accustomed to having work experience etc alongside so will meet safeguarding requirements etc.

Barefoot, rock crunching and covering up to 100km per week each. (One on left is stood on a hill).
