I am currently bringing on a lovely little mare, and she is doing really well. The problem is that she incestently shakes her head. She puts it down to almost her knees and then shakes it from side to side very powerfully, almost unseating me!

I have had the dentist to look at her teeth/mouth, and have tried different bits. It is such a shame as she is a lovely girl. The shaking normally comes during a transition, she settles a bit in canter, but it is worse in trot!

she may get hayfever sound silly i know but iv known a head shaker that had it and they were advised to put a nose net on and were given medication which helped alot ..good luck

Could be an allergy, or an avoidance.

J was the same after he was first backed, was convinced he was a headshaker, but turned out he was just being very clever at avoiding the contact, everytime he did it I gave him a decent pony club kick and sent him forwards, leaving the contact the same. He soon got out of the habit

He was worse in transitions, and trot, canter wasnt too bad though, but wasnt really asking him to work in canter at that point. You have to be really tough though and make sure you time the kick as soon as she starts to do it, no point doing it afterwards. Keep you hands nice and still so she has to move forwards into a nice contact. It will take a while (took J a good month to get out of the habit) so dont give up too soon.

Try a nose net as it may be due to allergy, esecially at this time of year.

Might sound odd - try a chiropracter. Ours knows our rider very well and has spoken of a couple who needed the top of their neck adjusting, loads of gunk came out of their noses and then they were perfect. Also, once you have tried this and the nosenet you can rule out almost everything and get a little tougher if it simply evasion.
