Well, i thought that i had cracked it and found the perfect low sugar, statch etc feed for my good doer cob mare, that is only ridden occasionally. I phoned allen and page and they reccommended fast fibre - which sounded perfect! The only problem is that it has to be mixed with chaff and they all seem to have mollases in! Can anyone reccomend one that is very low calorie please?

Hi Fi Lite or Dengie Good Doer are low in calories/ molasses. My Highland has been fed on Hi Fi lite for years for weight management, she won't eat Good Doer though

Why does it have to be mixed with chaff? Mine used to eat it without chaff (until they went off it completely and have refused to touch it ever since!)

Anyway, Ossichaff do a "plain and simple" chaff which is just chopped straw and hay - nothing whatsoever added.

You could see if you could get your own chaff made by a local farmer with a chaff cutter?

I use Hifi Lite which I am sure has a tiny amount of molasses in it, but I feed my sugar and cereal intolerant WB a handful of this in his A&P sugar and cereal intolerant feed.
You don't needs loads of chaff - it;s just sugested to make the horse chew and give the feed crunch.

I would rather not mix it with chaff, but i have just phoned the allen & page advice line and the girl said that as it was a wet feed it needed to be mixed with a chaff to give them something to chew?!

Well, thats good then. It seems daft that i would have to add another feed, and i am feeding hay so may just try the fast fibre on its own?

my sisters tb is on a small scoop of calm and condition which you have to soak like the fast fibire and he has a handfull of hi fi lite mixed in with it. (we think he he is secratly a cob instead of an exracer as he is happy to live off grass, hay and a stupidly small amount of feed, is not rugged up to the eyes and still has a nice covering in the thick of winter) He doesn't like it without a little bit of chaff. and the hi fi lite has nothing in it.

I feed sugar and cereal intolerant too, but with a handful of Happy Hoof and only cos the pony has it, otherwise i wouldn't bother :)

Adding the chaff stops them bolting the feed too quickly. I use the Mollichaff Kalmer chop - it's just chopped straw with extra magnesium and camomille. Ours love it!

That's really odd...

We have yard visits from them (they'll pop out for free and sort out a feeding regime per horse, check weight etc if there's a few to visit) and that was never recommended as a normal way to feed FF and we've got 7 between us who eat it... Some mixed with another feed but some on FF alone...

It's an option if one tends to throw their food down fast to slow him/her up or to pad the meal out a bit, but not essential according to their nutrition rep...

Oh and as with others we've had the free yard visit and this is what their nutritionist advised. Basically feed it on it's own but you can mix it with a chaff if you wish to xx

It's Daphne who comes out to us... Which reminds me I need to book a new visit...

We do add HoneyChop to one of the meals - the pony we have on loan who can inhale everything in her bucket in record speed... :D

Ours have usually had Fast Fibre mixed with some Dengie HiFi Lite just for added interest and to slow them down a bit. Have also used Safe and Sound and Happy Hoof too but prefer the HiFi.

For our older pony who eats more slowly I have been putting just a tiny bit of chaff in so that he can eat his more easily. I love Fast Fibre!
