i have a big clumsy rug destroyer :)

i know that the flies will be an issue with him this summer (new yard has a huge pond in the field) can anyone recommend a good fly rug?

Premier Equine do a stronger-than-mesh fly rug, the sweet-itch buster. I have one, the material is strong 1000d and there are no snags like you get with the meshy rugs.

The Bucas fly rug has no adjustment on the belly flap - it is not snug to the belly. It might be if your horse is built like a tank. My horse got his hind hoof caught under the flap and had to struggle blindly to get it off over his head as he busted 3 of the 4 elasticated clips, while trying to get his leg out. He had the rug on from dusk til dawn for only 4 weeks. Some days he did not even wear the rug. Their hind legs can just slide in under the elastic. I am lucky he did not break a leg. Also it faded badly after only 2 x 30 degree synthetic washes. They recommend that the rug be washed every 2 weeks - I think the stripes would be badly faded by October if purchased at the beginning of the season.:(

The Rambo hoody is really durable, I've seen one of the ponies my boy is turned out with grab it by one of the ear holes and pull and it hasn't even stretched. I had an Amigo Mio before that, which he ripped after about 2 weeks. He's had the Rambo for nearly 2 years now, and apart from being dirty, looks pretty good.

I also have the Rambo Sweet Itch Hoody. It's in its third season and the polyester mane lining is JUST starting to fray. The outer rug is still in great condition, though. I'm so impressed with it. Her previous rug lasted 24 hours.
