hi, am looking to get a new turnout rug for my 13.2hh welsh sec b for the winter (was going to see if being organised means i can get a bargain :)
can anyone recommend a good rug? have had some good ones and awful ones in the past so am intersted in anyones opinions. thanks

the horseware amigo rugs are very good value. I got a medium weight 1200d for about £40. You can get the 600d ones for even less but they rip easier. Look for the dodgy colours as they are generally reduced at the end of each season.

thanks il look into those. last year i had one which coverered his neck as well with a kind of stretchy material joining the neck bit, but was thinking this year of getting one with a detatchable neck cover.....

I second the Horseware Amigo suggestion! I've had all kinds of rugs but got a Horseware Amigo for one of my horses last winter (with detachable neck) and it's a beautifully made rug which no doubt will last. They are more suited to the less chunky types of horse so I think a sec b would be fine in one (I prefer Weatherbeetas for chunkier horsies). I've had some cheaper rugs before but I think it's worth paying the money for a good one which will cause you less hassle and will last. :)

You can often find them on ebay or elsewhere and it's definitely worth trawling through the sites for a while to get your bargain.

I always use the same seller on ebay... ridelouk... http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/ridelouk/
I had a pony on loan a couple of years ago, i was told don't bother spending money on rugs in the winter, they will last a few days then be torn in half and left in a heap in the corner of the field (pony could wriggle out of anything) i bought a medium weight from 'ridelouk' and it lasted all winter and the owner still uses it on him now years later.... no problems at all, very generous fit on rugs with tent tail flap so no wind, mud or rain can get underneath!!!! AMAZING RUGS!!!

I got my boy a m/w weatherbeeta Landa original (not the freestyle one). It's great! really warm, totally waterproof, great fit and despite some very obvious attempts to trash it made by his field mates it has come out of winter with a handful of small tears (largest an inch long) which have all been easily sewn up. I washed it myself and it has come up like new. love it!

It was only about £50 and its a 6ft6 - so not small!

i love premier equine rugs - i have the trio and got it for an absolute bargain price in their sale :D they do great sales ;)

I always buy 'Weatherbeeta' rugs for my horse.
They last for years, are hard wearing & good value for money.
They fit my TB lovely, unlike some rugs that used to rub her raw.

XxX

I have had my Mark Todd mediumweight turnout with detachable neck cover for, honest to god, at least 5 years. It has had one patch and one surcingle replaced and that's it. They are SUCH good quality rugs and last for so long that if you work out the cost per winter, it's something ridiculous like £15.

FAR better to spend on quality and have it last than to pay for something less good quality and have to replace it each year. Plus, they always sell for loads on ebay so if you ever need to get rid of it you can sell it there.

Last winter, I splashed out on a very heavyweight, as turning him out in layer upon layer of rugs was a nightmare. I got the Rambo supreme (secondhand on ebay, still in great condition) and found it to be excellent. He was always toastie and the neck cover zips on so the rain doesn't get through. Excellent rug.

I have not had very good experiences with Masta rugs, I have to say. They always seem to rip in the same place and I end up replacing them very quickly. I would not recommend them.

I always use Horseware. Mine is a hooligan in the field with hers and the Horseware is the only one that's stood up to her abuse :D.

Fantastic rugs. Also, the half-neck one doesn't slip back and rub her shoulders like many cheaper brands do. It also doesn't slip or move about when she's in the field.

The Rambo Duo is a very good rug and comes with different weight liners so that you can layer it up or down dependant on the weather/temperature. It has a detachable neck cover too. I have used the liners with stable rugs for extra warmth in Winter. Very hardwearing rug and worth its weight in gold, Ive had mine coming up 5 yrs now and its washed and re-proofed like new each year. It also has a 3 yr guarantee.

I definately like the amigo rugs, though most of the horseware ones i've had have been really good and great value for money as well.

MarkTodd are my favourite but they are very expensive so i don't have them on the ponies

thanks for all your advice and suggestions, going to check out the internet for horseware/mark todd/weatherbeeta see if i can find any bargains. (rambo duo as well that sounds ideal). now my boys going to be living out this winter want to make sure hes snug as a bug!
