So after the torrential rain we've had today I've realised I definitely need to buy a new rug. Can anyone recommend a rug that's really waterproof, 75-200g with a detachable neck?

I was looking at 'swish equestrian' as all their rugs are 1200 denier, is it right that the 1200 denier rugs are more waterproof than 600 denier?

Thanks :)

The denier doesn't indicate how waterproof they are but how 'rippable' they are. Buy the best you can afford. I would go for Rambo.

Again Rambo. Sorry. They are well worth it, you won't be replacing it every other year like all the cheaper makes.

If you do a good search online you can find real bargains.

Horseware Rambo every time for turnout.

The denier 'shouldnt' make a difference as that is the density of the weave, however that means with a 600 the waterproofing has to jump a bigger gap than with the 1200 so I prefer the 1200 myself.

I've got a couple of swish rugs and have been really impressed by the quality of them, the only thing for me is that I won't buy their full neck rugs as they just don't fit my horse, I have a combo heavyweight stable rug fab rug- just looks like the neck has been designed upside down, but that may just be my that my horse is an odd shape! Otherwise can't fault them for quality and waterproofness!

Buds is out in his gallop 200g, its had 24hr of rain now and he's still warm and dry. Try fast tack direct for bargains xx

oo thanks :). I was thinking about getting this one>> http://www.swish-equestrian.co.uk/details.php?cat=Rugs:Turnout Rugs&id=109

Do them come up particualrly big/small? What breed is your horse?

I'd love to get a Rambo, but I just can't afford to spend that much on a rug

Premier Equine

My girl has been out today in constant heavy rain and was bone dry and warm this evening it is only 40g but they do all weights right up to 450g. She wore the 300g one through last winter and was never once wet underneath it. Worth every penny.

Shires stormcheeta - it is my absolute favourite rug, the most waterproof I've come across :D we had torrential rain a few days ago, and my lightweight (no fill) didn't let in a drop of water. I got mine secondhand cheap and I would recommend it to anyone :)

Mine's had a rhino 200g on through all the foul weather & that's mega waterproof. I've got the half neck but think they do full neck as well.

What you need is a Nylon outer rather than polyester. I have found that higher denier rugs stay waterproof for longer.

I have a couple of Shires Typhoons (LW and 300g I think) that I'm very impressed with (ebay bargain but, Hope Valley Saddlery also have some good offers). Bucas Smartex and Rambo are fabulous but quite pricey at full RRP.
