My horse is a funny beggar, and as a young, immature ex-stud cut at 5 I've had my work cut out BIG time. I've got his hormones balanced finally, perfect manners in hand, and getting a lot better under saddle now he's finally found learning to be interesting instead of a power struggle, but he's quite capable of throwing a wobbler when he gets bored or confused.

Sitting on Alfie is like sitting on a board. He feels rigid, although his movement flows nicely and he has good action. But the second his bum goes up or under it's like bending the board so you're perched on the top feeling very insecure, thats the only way i can describe it.

I'm currently using a wintec adjustable and although its not the comfiest saddle in the world, it seems to have always worked for him. I had it fitted to him in November, he's had another two leather saddles before this one... All of them were pretty much the same in terms of how he felt underneath me, so I always assumed he wasnt the most comfortable horse in the world. During my lesson today I said to my instructor that when he uses his bum it feels like his back is arched, and I dont feel secure in the saddle.

Another livery at our place suggested I jump off and try her treeless saddle. So, we put the treeless on him, OH MY DAYS! He felt like a different horse. For the first time since I've had him I could FEEL his every movement, I felt safe, comfortable, and I got off him grinning like an idiot. And he seemed so much more up for working, stupid as it sounds I was a bit moved by how something so simple can make such a massive massive difference to both Alfie and me, and I can honestly say I have never felt so relaxed or comfortable on a horse! I asked where she got the saddle, apparently it's an Ebay used bargain that she's had about two years with no problems, though it doesnt have a brand name on it.

So.... I've been reading up everywhere on them ALL day, but with so many choices and a reluctance to purchase from Ebay, I NEED one of these, but my budget is limited having just set up a new business. I'd prefer one that looks like a proper saddle than a synthetic western (I guess you know what I mean when I say that, some of them are just plain ugly!!) The one I rode in today looks like a normal dressage saddle but without a flap to cover the stirrup attachments.

Could you guys pleeeease tell me what kind of treeless saddles you use, and what you paid for them?

I have a barefoot cheyenne - I love it, so comfy - have had it for years and used on 3 different horses. They are the best on the market at the lower budget range IMO.

I ride treeless but in Western style treeless saddles. I have the Freemax Western (haven't used the gp style of the Freemax but I thoroughly impressed with the western style), I paid £700 for that one, it looks and rides like a tree'd saddle but the horse knows otherwise! I imported another type of endurance/western hybrid treeless called an 'EZ Fit Saddle' which are hand-made to order by an Amish saddler and I love it so much I became their only rep outside the US. :D That was about £800 and was well worth the money because it really does fit everything.

A friend of mine has the Libra Trec saddle, they are about £185 for the synthetic version, and the Easy Trek saddles are a little more than that but I have heard they are good too. Those are both ideal saddles to play around with the treeless concept, as long as you have a good pad. :)

I have a Dream one and there saddle pad did buy there girth but get on better with a flexi girth then bought barnes buckles,
