Mojo Lil - the white Jack Russell pup in my siggy, is too skinny for my liking. Her little rib cage sticks out and so do her hip bones. I have asked the vet and he said not to be worried but I am! She eats like a little trooper, and is regularly wormed.

Also she has terrible itchy skin, no fleas and again the vet said not to worry too much, but yes I am still! She itches all over, and she looks so uncomfortable. Her coat gleams, but her white bits sometimes look pink and inflamed from itching so much.

She is fed on James Wellbeloved Lamb and Rice puppy kibble. Plenty of fresh water and markies, gravybones and cheese for treats.

I just want her to be happy!
 
Could it maybe be her food making her itch? As I know Beastie gets itchy on certain foods (funny though she can eat James Well Beloved. Either that or Burns, not much else though)

My OHs JRT is a skinny little chap as well but he is very active and is walked 3 times a day, so I wouldn't be overly concerned. Also if you get her spayed she might put weight on a little easier (my heiffer did

Agree that she could have intolerence to her feed.

But I would also be thinking along the 'mange' line. Ask your vet to do a skin scrapeing to check perhaps.
 
I suggested allergies to the vet but he said it was too early for her to have allergies.
I think I might schedule her in for another check up then, is it demodectic or sarcoptic mange that is bad for humans?
 
It could be your feed is too rich for her, so I'd try a lower grade, possibly something like Chappie and some small mixer as that is simple and nutritious and the oiliness of the Chappie would help her skin.

For her skin, you could also try giving her some sulphur, either in the drinking water (it's yellow and looks like a lump of chalk and just sits in the water bowl) or we use tablets from the herbal shelf at the chemists, about £2 for 100 and I wrap them in cheese 'cos Ben loves cheese.

Ben has an allergy to hay and straw and pollen so rubs himself raw in the summer especially; the sulphur tablets seem to take all the heat and rawness away for him; it was known as a skin and blood cleanser in olden days! I also only use it when necessary, he's not on it if he's alright as I don't want him to become immune to it as it really does help him a lot. If it flares up suddenly, even just one tablet will help it and he doesn't know what's in it like you or I would, so it must work, it can't just be in his mind can it?!

She is almost 12 weeks old. We have had her about 4weeks now, she was weaned perhaps a week before we brought her home and was on hard food.

Thanks for the advice with the chappie, I would have to feed her separate from my dog pup because he is on JWB and blooms on it, but its not a problem.
 
James Wellbeloved made my lab very very itchy - changed her food to SImple Systems Dog's Dinner (1/3 of the price !!) and she's a changed dog!. I'd definitely change to a different brand of puppy food
 
I wouldn't worry too much about her weight, my JRT never carried any weight till he was a year old and had been neutured. I would however stop the cheese as some dogs can be intollerant to dairy, so this may be causing the itch. My JRT was on nature's diet as a puppy, he now has chappie which contain fish oils I believe so is great for their skin/coat. Oz is allergic to grass pollen, but I have found a spoon of liquidized spinage with a squirt of honey in each feed helps stop the itch and pink skin.
 
I would agree with PE. My Jack Russell was quite slim when he was younger, but the vet just said that he was just energentic and burnt off the food and that he would improve as he grew up, his weight is fine now.
 
Wouldn't worry about weight, they'll improve as they get older. Mine's now 1 and half he weighs 7.6 kg but still is very slim as he's always on the go! He's netured too.

As for itchy, Boris does suffer from itchy skin, he was on JWB changed to Burns (for mornings) and nature diet in evenings, he also get fish on sundays, gleaming coat, itchness is noticably less than it used to be. He used to stratch his skin raw esp in the armpits now he hasn't.

By the way he's White JRT (with short legs!)

Yep friend saw it recommended in a doggy magazine so tried on her ESS, it worked so then I tried it on Oz (JRT), it also worked for him!!!! I have no idea why/how it works vet thinks it's bonkers but agrees skin is better and can't see any harm in it. I buy frozen spinage and just defost a few cubes at a time, then liquidize with a squidge of honey. I add one heap teaspoon to his evening feed in the Spring/Summer.

Thats interesting... will try that, good job i have just seeded some home grown spinach! hope he likes them...
