Hi all, im hoping someone out there can help me??!!!!!!!! i have a phobia of travelling horses (even my quiet 1s that have travelled for years!) it all started quite a few months back when a horse i bought and picked up decided it didnt like travelling (as in the momentum not the loading!) unfortunatly where i bought her from wasnt far from the motorway so when she kicked off first on the a12 slip road we had a vet come sedate her and was told she would be fine to continue journey with, unfortunatly she woke up 40mins later still not liking the idea of travelling! i had stupidly travelled in the trailer with her thiking i could keep her calm, she went mad trashed the partition, got the frame around her and tryed to flip over...all whilst doing 60 on the m25 nearly tipping the trailer! alot of vet bills later and a long stay in nearest equine hospital and special permission to drug her on way home topping it up myself so she didnt come around we got her back. I have had a couple play up since nothing major and also had a racehorse from work go through a partition again with me being the only one with it that could sort it really not fun! Now i am just a wreck when it comes to travelling, my heart goes mad all the way, i have mini panic attacks if i hear a noise, snap everyones heads off, shake and my legs go like jelly which isnt helpfull on the clutch when i cant get anyone else to drive! I thought it would get better if i kept doing it (bearing in mind i compete nearly every week! so do it quite often) but it hasnt improved in the slightest! I compete all the time and i cant afford to pay a transporter! Has anyone got any suggestions of anything i can try or take??!! sorry for the long post!!!!! if you managed to get this far a large glass of your prefered alcoholic beverage is well deserved!!!

I am sorry to hear your problem, have you heard of Bachs Flower remedy, they do all different sorts for different problems. I use the one which is Rescue Remody, you can get this in a bottle and you just drop a small amount on your tongue, it might be worth checking out their website to see if any of the others they do might be better for you. Some people will poo poo Bachs but I find they work for me. I hope you find something that works for you, and helps you to overcome your fears.

I've taken Rescue Remedy when competing with the dog (it comes in drops, chewing gum, lozenges and spray :o yes, all at the same time :o :o :o) dunno if it is placebo or not but it has worked and stopped me freaking out. Even the last time when he failed to even start his test after weeks of training and got 0 points I dandered back down to the dog trailer smiling and shrugging :p

I totally sympathise with you as I am exactly the same :(.
After years of wanting a horsebox I finally got my own and its been hell. I hardly used it, then sold it through lack of use, making every excuse going not togo anywhere. Anyway Ive bought another and I make myself drive it and its torture. My horse was a fantastic traveller until I tried him in my trailer. He was awful and scared me to death (I used to go everywhere in my trailer with my last horse on my own with no issues) It wrecked his confidence and although he loads in the wagon fine, he is nervous and I am too :(. I imagine all sorts happenning and am on pins. 'What if' is my favourite saying.
Thanks for posting this as I am really interested in your replies.

Wow - thats a seriously traumatic experience to undergo. If it was once in a blue moon you needed to travel I'd suggest seeing your GP about some 5mg valium in much the way they prescribe it for flying phobias.

But benzos are addictive & serious meds, so on a weekly basis this isn't wise or practical.

How about hypnotherapy?

Yes I can, stop all caffine intake, seriously, this helps loads. you get a headache for a day the thats it,you sleep better and everything.

Rescue remedy is really good! Try the pastilles or the spray.

Dont travel in the box with the horse, you could have been really hurt too, then you cant do anything to help them! You could also try giving them Naf magic syringe, its pretty good and will take the edge off him. x

i think the level of anxiety you are talking about & the situations that lead to it are serious & per haps beyond herbalism - would you consider hypnotherapy or neurolinguistic [sorry cant spell] programmimg [NLP] or even some cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT] - there is huge variance in the levels of compatence in therapist - but the british assoc of counselors [BAC] might be a good place to start - really hope you can sort it out:)

I use rescues remedy I have a terrible problem/phobia of something and I have to say this really helps me, I take the night melts the night before a few drops in water on the day and the spray as a when needed, I know some people hold no value in it but I find it really helps. Sorry to hear about your experience.

I cant say from personal experience but i hear rescue rememdy is good, what a traumatic experience :( no wonder your nervous xx

Thanks everyone for your supportive replys and suggestions!!! I think i will write a list of the suggestions and give them a whirl (one at a time obvs :-) ) and i will post an update afterwards! and yes im more than willing to give hynotherapy etc a go! well when the horses slow down for a bit from eating my money so i can afford too! hopefully anyone else that has a fear in travellng like myself will get some help from the replys on this post aswel! thankyou :-)
