Hi all :)

I need some help! Finally decided this morning that we are probably sending our girl off to stud next year, however, i cant decide on the stallion.. so i would like some suggestions..

My girl is 15.2hh but very finely built, she's polish knabstrupper X Thoroughbred but carries the TB body.. (she's in my album if people want to see her in flesh)
She is also very short backed so i dont want to put her to a stallion who may produce a too bigger foal for her to carry - plus its her first!

Ideally i'd like something that can jump as Gems jumping ability is outstanding so i could in theory get a nice little jumping machine out of her! I dont really want to have another spotty however i think this is un avoidable- but would like a dark coloured stallion anyway - bay/black etc however may consider something else if its really nice!

I live in the South west so something reasonably local too!!
Stud fee isn't a huge issue..

Tea and biscuits if you've managed to get this far.. please help! :D

I love my eclipse and he is definitely on the list, i am however quite worried about going for a stallion any taller then 16 hands as she's so small and short backed.. would it be more of a risk with a bigger stallion or will the foal only grow to the size of the mare's womb?

I think the foal can only grow to how big the womb will go? (but someone please correct me if I'm wrong!)
My friend has put her 14.2 to a 16.2 so I don't think it would be a problem for your girl.

Also just noticed that My Eclipse's advert does not say his height, he doesn't look too big though :)

He's 16hh i believe, it would be lovely to get something a bit taller then her!

Thanks again!

;) Oh boy! What's the betting someone jumps on you with hobnailed boots for that comment! :) I know what you mean though.

I can't help with stallion choice as I am way out of touch on that subject, you may get a few more suggestions if you repost in Breeding, or join the Horse Breeders fb page. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/143818049022472/

Good Luck, I hope you find something to suit.

Oh, I am dim, you are in my old neck of the woods, three that come instantly to mind are:

Henry Horn on here has a stallion producing very useful stock :)

Jill at Shovern: http://www.shovernstud.co.uk/

also there is Llangaller in Bovey of course, Charles always has decent sorts at his place : http://www.langallerfarm.co.uk/

Oo im quite scared now... ;) - however, surely it would be stupid to breed something without a purpose and this little one will be kept with us forever too, so will not be rushed or pushed to soon.. ;p - please people don't jumping on me for that comment. :( ;)

And thank you i'll have a look and also PM Henry Horn

:p

another vote for shovern stud, some nice boys there http://www.shovernstud.co.uk/

Dalcotes stud is also in your neck of the woods I believe: http://www.dalcotes.co.uk/

If your looking at ai it opens up more possibilities and I would recommend you look at the boys at meadow, especially cashpoint and donder for jumping ability. http://www.meadowstud.com/donder.html or talan and vangelis s if you have a bigger budget.

If you'd consider a grey I would highly recommend you look at undercover, not over big at only 16.1 with ability and good breeding: http://www.sport-horse-sales.co.uk/...-jumping-stallion-standing-at-stud/printpage/

Or if a coloured then rubicolour is throwing some nice foals, out of 4 or 5 foals I know this year, all bar 1 were coloured and the other is likely to grey out (grey dam): http://www.vagelloron-stud.co.uk/Rubicolor.htm

What I know about breeding can fit on the back of a postage stamp, but...............
I know 2 people that have used Major League and both 'foals' (one now 6 and the other 4) are wonderful. The 4 year old's dam was put in foal purely as a last result to calm her down (she was very mareish and would have been retired otherwise, long story) and, thankfully, the filly inherited the sire's great temperment. Both offspring were successful inhand as youngstock and the 4 year old is showing tremendous promise over a fence (not competing jumping as yet) and is unbeaten shown under saddle as a sport horse.
Although, I think Major League may have been quite old and might no be a stud horse any more!

I have to say my first thought was 'what about a performance native', i.e. Connie, Welsh D, NF. Would add substance without size, some have a serious jump on them. But I suppose it depends on how tall you are and what level you are wanting to jump to. Worth considering though!
Or even a part bred - is Ganton Rufus still around, think he was west country?

OP I had a my eclipse foal and she was quite large, but she seems to be a one off - speaking to Mel (who owns Eclipse) she said that most of his offspring end up about the 15.2 mark tbh

This is my mare (15.1 welsh x Anglo Arab)

And this is what I got

http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/...view&current=DSC02608.jpg&mediafilter=noflash

Her temperament is to die for, which seems to be the same for all the Eclipse babies I've met. She is an absolute super star and if I put my mare in foal again he is on the list for stallions.

She has grown to about 16hh but my mare does seem to throw biggish foals. go and meet eclipse if you can - he is really lovely, a true gent

(i hope the links work! I'm on my iPad and haven't worked out how to put the image codes on my post lol)

Unfortunately I really don't want to put her to a native- For many reasons, mainly that I'm 5'9ft and want something to jump 1.20+ tracks on In the future!

Think I have pretty much decided on "my eclipse" however talking to Henry horn who's stallion sounds gorgeous and perfect I am again indecisive- going to have to leave the decision to my gran who is fantastic at choosing the right horse.. :-)

Henryhorn's stallion would be perfect.

Hi all! I have decided on Henryhorn's stallion for my girl, i fell in love with him at the first sight of his photo! So its all now depending on whether i get this new job, then of we go :) Very exciting stuff!

Thank you all for your suggestions! :D
