Am having some internal stable panels made up with tongue and groove at the bottom with grilles above.

Can anyone tell me what diameter their bars are on their grilles, the spacing between, and the height of their panels, both lower panel and upper? My stables are 12x12ft and I would like to know if there is a standard size for the above, of if it is just personal preference.

My old stables (1850 ish designed for working horses) had solid wood to approx 5' then bars above. Bars were approx 1" and approx 4" apart. They were very high in very large stables, you wouldn't throw a rug over them without a ladder. I would think you can chose any dimensions you like if you are having them made, no idea if there is a standard off the shelf measurement.

My current stables have about 7' high partitions, with diagonal cattle feed barrier type bars large enough that they can put their heads through, would guess they are 1' apart. Ponies have to move in the winter and the cows use them so that is why it is set up for cattle.

In my new stables (not yet constructed) the plan is to have a 5' block wall dividing them, no bars. If I require bars at a later date I will add them then, but I don't think my two will require them.

Thanks SuperH, I guess you are right, I can just choose what I want! Your new ones sound like my old ones at my parents house, I just fancied a change with the grilles in this one - don't really need them, I just want them!

I bet the old work horse ones look lovely - my old stables would have originally looked like that I bet, before the partitions were replaced with blocks in the 60's - sacrilege! The ones I have been using at my husband's farm were workhorse stalls too - I can't believe how small they would have been, and how low the ceilings are in both buildings, especially when they would have housed much bigger horses!

On the plus side though, in the old ones all they had to do was open the bedroom door which led in to the loft next door, above the stables, and drop the hay and feed through hatches straight down below - genius!
