felt a lump on my horse as i was grooming him today and had a look under all his fluff and saw this. can anyone give me an idea as to what it might be? it didnt bother him when i touched it so it's not causing pain. i'm not sure how long it has been there as you can't see it unless you part the hair as he is so fluffy!
(first time trying to add a picture so hope it works!)

It could be a multitude of things, possibly a healing burst abcess caused from thorn/splinter or from a tick or from a blocked sweat duct. Could possibly be a sarcoid although I'm not convinced, and even less convinced by warble.

Doesn't look to horrendous though, I'd give it a good squeeze (yuk!) and a scrub with antiseptic and see if it heals naturally. Also give him a good once over to make sure there aren't any other similar lesions.

Is the black lump in the middle anything? If a tick savlon/vaseline etc will smother or can remove if done properly. Ive not seen a tick bite which causes a large lump of bare open skin around it though.
Looks open and raw so would be curious as to why he wasn't fussed by it.
Am off to look up the fly now as never heard of it.

thanks, i've got some sudocream at the yard so will put a bit of that on after cleaning it each day. i felt over the rest of him and couldnt feel any bumps but will do it again more thoroughly tomorrow

Just thought i'd update for anyone who cares.

i've been cleaning it every day and it still isn't bothering him, even when i spent 15 minutes prodding around and squeezing it (ew!)
nothing came out when i squeezed it. the black bit in the middle is hard and kind of scabbed over but can't get anything out. still not sure what it is but it's not causing him any bother!

I would have to try and pick the scab off the black area incase its covering what ever the black thing is. Looks like a thorn or a piece of wood.

Eeeek, that does look Warbly.... But I didn't think we had warble fly in this country anymore?

You're right, it isn't in the UK anymore, it used to be a problem with bovines back when I trained as we were warned about warble holes spoiling the hides.
The fly if there were any, would be emerging along the spinal area not the shoulder and it's the wrong time of year for warble flies hatching anyway

Looks like what my lad has on his hock. Some times I squeeze it and stuff comes out some times it doesn't. I thought it may be a thorn gone in there but after 6 yrs you would think it would have gone but now I think small sarcoid. Doesn't bother him so I'm not worried

When I found a burst abscess on my cat, it looked exactly like that! He'd been bitten play fighting, and no sign of wound (long-haired!) until a bad smell one morning when it burst and a mark like that... Gave it a good sluice with salt water then wound spray and trimmed as much hair away as I could.

Vet couldn't do much more than clip it for me to make it easier to clean and give painkillers and antibiotic jab - cat much more comfortable afterward and less worry about whether there was any ick still lurking in the hole.

Vet said not an emergency, but needed jabs...

i'd clip the surrounding hair about 1/2 inch on either side all round and clean it every day and well with hibiscrub or similar wound wash.
Dry well then apply either an anti bacterial/ fungal cream like fuciderm and keep an eye on it.
It needs to be kept clean to avoid infection.

the black center looks either like necrotic tissue (from your description of it being scab like) or a splinter from a puncture or trauma site.

its not a warble and wrong time of year for fly bites anyway.
