What the difference in rugs with ballistic outside layers and those of the same denier with non-ballistic outers? How strong is the first one in comparision to it's non ballistic equivalant?

Ballistic nylon is a very good, tough material for turnout rugs to be made from. Top end rugs tend to use it. Cheaper rugs are often made from polyester or polypropylene.

Horseware is a good example.

Amigo 600d (basic turnout) = Polyester
Amigo 1200d = Polyester (but tougher than 600d version)
Rhino 1000d = Polypropylene (mid range)
Rambo 1000d = ballistic nylon (their top range turnout)
