I have a 14.2hh coloured who i keep as a traditional/ native type. He does very well at local shows always top 4. But I would like to do more! Have had mixed opinions on wither I should show him plaited or native don't think I could cut his lovely mane though! He has slight feathers buts that's about it! Would I be able to do working hunter on him as native or would I need to plait? What other classes can I do? he's got a great wee pop! Thanks!!

Working hunter is for hunter types. A cob/native is not a hunter type. You may be able to find a working cob class. This is roughly the same as WH, ie rustic fences.

You may be ok at lower levels, but if you jumped clear, I would highly doubt you would be placed, as the horse is not correct for the type of class.

You can do working show horse classes which are for other types not hunters, but don't see any reason why you couldn't do working hunter at riding club shows etc.

 Oh my... my whole season could be thrown into disarray! My horse certainly doesn't look like a hunter but he rides better than most you will see in the ring. I'd better go and do something else so as not to upset the judge!!! We only did it once last year but came second, if I see that judge again I'll apologise to her.
Fair enough I wouldn't expect us to win at RIHS or HOYS but as confirmation is only a small percentage of the marking (he has good confirmation for his type but it's not standard hunter type) I'd expect to do well at lower levels if we jump clear and give a nice show or a nice ride to the judge.

Local you can get away with being a native/traditional, I do very well with my lad. However, higher level then unless plaited and of a hunter type then no.

Look out for working cob that allows traditionals to take part, there are more of them around as people are realising that the hairies can really jump.

For local shows, you may want to put a running plait in the mane if it is very long.
