the flies are driving my pony mad this year, mainly the horse flies, so i was considering getting him a fly rug. but then i thought, horse flies can bite me through my thick jodphurs, so are fly rugs more to prevent midges biting?

for those that use fly rugs can you tell me if they help with the horse flies?

thanks,

My mate has a horse that needs fly rugs on all the time, and YES they still do get though the rug, Some get caught under the fly rug.

Well my horse has sweetitch and she wears the boett which is made of a special material that flies cant bite through. Though of course whenever the rug comes off to ride, the flies could get her. Ive no had a problem so far though, Deanna still has a full mane and tail and is 100 x's happier in herself.

Wouldn't opt for the boett unless your horse has proper sweet itch lol It's rather expensive for an every day fly rug. Im still paying Mum back for mine!

Some fly rug materials are tougher than others so it may be harder for a horsefly to bite through them! 2 of my horses have rambo fly rugs and i have seen no evidence of fly bites however on the horse that has a weatherbeeta one i have found bite lumps!

thanks for your comments. i thought the rambo one looked good as some of the horses have them at work and they seem tough. my pony doesnt really get sweet itch, he just gets bitten very badly by the horse flies!

Read my post further down - my horse is out in a close contact fly rug but is being bitten to death - at first thought it was ants but now im thinking maybe a horse fly has got underneath the rug - getting worse every day

However i've had this rug for a year and this is the first time it hasnt worked - highly recommend it - mark todd.
