Can horse wormers kill dogs if they eat droppings with wormer in it?

I think horse wormers are poisonous to dogs - if you read the instructions they always say not to allow dogs near used syringes etc. You could maybe find out more from a website selling wormers? Or your vet?

i think it can do yes. Our old dog ate some once (many years ago). I think she was just scoffing food and we hadn't really thought about it (v stupid). Later that evening I noticed she was acting odd (being a bit more clingy than normal). I then realised her pupils were really dilated and she steadily got worse and seem to lose her coordination and balance, she bumped into door frames etc. After speaking to the vet they advised to keep her in a quiet room and with the lights off/dimmed and allow her to sleep. however, they said the main concern was to make sure she didn't fall in to a coma! Thankfully she was ok the next day. I am not sure what a vet can do treatment wise to reverse the effects.

I make sure now though we never have the dogs at the stables on a worming day!

Oh, just noticed you said in droppings - i wouldn't have thought the wormer would come out in the droppings? I couldbe wrong but the main concern is to make sure the dog doesn't eat any of the feed you may have put the wormer in, or get hold of a used syringe/any bits that may have dropped on the floor etc,

This is what I'm hearing and I have a young Collie but I can't see that there can be much danger in the droppings? Have been around horses for 30 years, some of that in the work environment and dogs are on nearly every yard you ever go to - never heard this before. Just checked Dog Wormers and some are made of the same drugs :-$. Very confusing. Will speak to vet also but can't do so until Monday, which is why I wanted to canvass views on here!!!! Thanks for responding.

Blimey I hope not, I didn't even think when I took my springer up the yard with me this afternoon, she was pinching some poo which I tried to stop her doing, but you know what they are like !

She's busy chewing her chewy now, think she's ok, hope so,will keep an eye on her for defo

Sure can,we nearly lost Nell, who had a snack of manure that had been picked up from the paddock as usual and put on the muck heap.

Dog and cat wormers are the same as praziquantel for horses. Ivermectin is dangerouns in dogs/cats that can't tolerate it. Your vet has a list of breeds that can't use it e.g. collies.

Can imagine it could kill a dog if taken at horse doses!!

i know wormers are poisonous to dogs prior to the horse digesting them. I am pretty sure there would be very minimal amount of the wormer actually in the droppings as it has been digested by the horse. But if you are worried ask your vet.
