The fancy has taken me to make some horse treats.
My dad makes treats for the dogs using flour, milk, eggs, cheese and garlic. And I was wondering if something similar would be ok for horses to eat. I was thinking of replacing the garlic and cheese with apple or carrot?
Would horses eat this? would it work? is there anything harmful in this?

Can't think that there is anything there to harm them in small doses. I had thought along the same lines TBH. Garlic should be ok and they would probably like the cheese also. Mine both like quavers.

I normally mix some grated apple and carrot with some meadow mix and a spoon of molasses, roll into balls, squidge until flattish then bake them.

I havr sometimes made, a little ball, ingredients....

Treacle
Grated carroot
Grated parsnip
Porridge oats
honey

they love it

Also sometimes put apple in

ohh wall these ideas sound like a new project for me! Ive never considered making my own treats.. but as they say desperate times and all that..

Sod the horses - they sound yummy!!

I wouldn't feed my horse milk or eggs, they are herbivours which menas neither is natural for them to eat. Everything else would be fine, maybe use syrup or molasses to bind the mix?

That's a really good point, thank you princessspark1e. I never feed meat but hadn't thought about the dairy food.
I will try the treacle recipes

Er...milk isn't natural for neds? Try telling that to all the foals out there. My friend has a TB who can drop half his body weight just by walking to his stable door. At one point, and on very experienced advice, she was adding baby milk formula to his feed to get some weight back on. Worked I might add.

I've fed my horse eggs with no problems, shell and all - still give him one as a treat, sometimes. They used to be fed a lot before all the new feeds came out, my auntie had a horse in very poor condition and fed him eggs in his feed as they didn't have conditioners in those days!

I am also inspired to make treats - my friend's horse is on box rest and it would be great to give him something during the day. She's quite down about it so it would really cheer her up - thanks for the inspiration

I would advise against feeding dairy products to horses.....and although it's not a dairy product as such, but wouldn't give them eggs either.

Me and my sister make our lot christmas flapjacks. Which is a mix (to your liking and consistency):

Porridge oats, top spec, golden syrup

and the other variation:

Porridge oats, top spec, black treacle

Mix it all up in a bowl, and bake in the oven in a GREASEPROOF PAPER lined tray (otherwise you're not getting that mix out for anything!!) just to 'glue' it all together until its crisper on the top!

I won't lie, got dared to eat one, they taste really nice!! Horse feed.....tastes nice!! I wouldn't like to try speedi beet though....or Bruces' anti-humping powder. Bleh. xoxo
