This probably seems like an odd question but does anyone know if it is possible to graze horses on barley stubble? I am looking at renting a cottage with some land. The field is currently in crop wih barley and looks as though it is ready to be harvested. I presume it was a spring crop?!?! The owner of the property says that it would be possible to use the land for grazing in the coming months. I presume the land would then have to be re-seeded or undersown with grass seed??? Is it possible to graze horses over the winter months on the stubble while another section of the field is being prepared for grass? I would provide an ad-lib supply of hay.

Grazing on stubble can be done, but be ware, the new grass growing through can cause laminitis especially at this time of year.

If you have sectioned a small area off with little grass, it should be ok. But be aware of the risks.
