Found this horse in a field on her own today. She looked in a sorry state, so we stopped to have a look. Here are some pics:

While we were there, she made this strange noise, put her head down, then loads of saliva and gunk came out of her mouth like she'd vomited. Any idea what this may have been?

She was VERY unresponsive the whole time we were there. She's also covered in something that looks quite like rainscald.

What do you think? Is it worth reporting her?

Thanks guys.

Lou.

No - horses CANNOT vomit. I would suspect a respiratory problem.

This horse looks VERY poor.

Any chance of finding the owner? If not - I would report it immediately.

Horses can't vomit as they have a strong sphincter sealing off their stomach...but sounds like she may have been choking or quidding a bit.
She looks rough as rats...underweight and likely wormy.
Also looks like a trotter to me.
I'd get in touch with either your local BHS welfare rep, or the ILPH. RSPCA are utterly useless, don't know ass from olecranon process

PS I can read your car reg...perhaps not a good move?

Definitely, definitely report it - the horse is emaciated and it also sounds like she is not at all well. Try the ILPH as they are usually better than the RSPCA and you could email the photos to them so they know you are not over-exaggerating. What sort of grazing was she on and was there any hay out in the field?

Please report her to the ILPH today - don't bother with the RSPCA. The ILPH will do something about her. I know that horse's with grass sickness have green gunk coming out of their noses. She is obviously in a terrible state and ill - well done for spotting her, now please report her.

Poor thing, strange ,the field looks ok and the fence good, has she just arrived there she looks terrible.I would phone the RSPCA straight away.Do you live near ,where there any houses to ask who owns her.You must do something

Definately report to the ILPH poor little mare, she is obviously in a severe state of neglect.

No, horses cannot vomit, it is more likely that she has a virus or some sort which is affecting her breathing and her lungs are congested too more than likely.

How can people let a horse get like this?

Well, here's the problem...the owner is a gypsy. And yes, she IS a trotter.

I've reported gypsy horses several times and nothing is EVER done. I'll do it anyway, but i dont hold out much hope. Thanks guys.

[/ QUOTE ] Good point - can you ask around and double-check that she has not just been rescued in that condition.

MY opinoin is strongly that you should report finding this horse. It obviously not in the best of condition to say the least. You have a few choices. If it were me i would report the situation to the BHS welfare or ILPH, RSPCA, police etc. I think i would also continue to monitor the situation myself as at times agencies are not always very quick to respond but be very mindful for your own safety if you choose to do this.

Report it. At least then you'll know you did all you could to help the poor animal. What possible excuse is there to let an animal get in that condition? Agree with posters about the RSPCA - go to the ILPH or BHS welfare officer first. And do be careful yourself.

1. Take down the photo of her teeth, as your car reg. is in it!!

2. You MUST report this poor horse to the ILPH ASAP!!

3. The only time a horse can vomit, is usually connected to Grass Sickness and when a horse does vomit, there isn't a lot that can be done to save it. The Cardiac Sphincter muscle at the entrance to the stomach from the oesophagus, prevents any back flow and generally, peristalsis only works in one direction in the horse - down.

I agree 100%. Ditto what everyone else has said about getting your car reg deleted too.

Report for definite - I'd back up what others have said about the rspca though. I reported a group of horses in a similar state to them, and nothing ever happened. ILPH might be a better option. Be careful about taking action yourself, e.g. worming, that horse should see a vet first and you don't want to get into any legal trouble (though it would be ridiculous if you did!).

Well done you, hope that this poor horse gets some help now. You should be really proud of yourself, so many people look away and don't do what you did.

REPORT IT. DAMN THE TRAVELERS AND WHAT THEY DO TO ANIMALS!
Do remove your car reg as they will come get you otherwise. But let's not him and haw about this. Stop sitting there and pick up the phone pronto.
Don't wait. This mare is dying if you want my opinion and not a very nice death either. The poor thing. How could you ask IF?
You're a horse lover or you wouldn't be here. Go to ILPH help line and phone right now!
Love you for caring,
Suzi

I HAVE reported her. I just wondered if i was seeing it worse that it is, so wanted other peoples' views. And also, if there's any point at all because according to the ILPH, "gypsies are above the law so there's not much point in trying to help their horses - they'll just move them on"!!!

poor horse! take as many photos as you can, and report to ILPH. if there is nothing done within a few days, i would start to moniter her yourself. i know you aren't supposed to, but i've heard of welfare services taking so long that horses starve to death before they arrive on the scene.
