There is a term, bridle lameness, which is as it suggests, the horse is lame when a bridle is put on.

As to why this happens, it is not one I am going to guess at :).

My old loan pony did this right before the National Championships. His ownder told me he was 'faking' to face him at a jump, and see if he was then fine.

After he jumped, he suddenly wasn't lame, but i don't think its common, and I guess some are that intelligent to do it [=

I disagree, yes, they can. Ours did regularly when we first got him. Horses are more intelligent than many of you give them credit for.

When I bought my mare, her old owner told me she used to fake being lame to get out of working and that if she cantered when asked then she was fine. Turns out she had ringbone in her near-fore, making her more noticeably lame in trot. Now with remedial shoes she is fine and has never been lame since...

Mind you, if I was owned by her previous owner I'd have faked lameness to get out of being ridden by her too!!! :p
