well the first one is how mad would you be if your YO owner had brought in your lame horse and punctureed her foot? mine did and used a knife on her foot as she said it was abscess when farrier came out next day he was fumming that someone had done that! he said it should have been poulticed and left, as he had already made a hole 4 days previous! so this leads to my next question, horsey has been in over a week now and hole has still not healed, she is still sensitive where the hole was cut, shes has wet dressings, dry dressings and now nothing but it seems to be taking forever to heal! any ideas what to put on it to help? i have kevin bacon stuff that i have been round it, not on it as this what farrier suggested but he also thought it would have healed by now. shes in stable 24/7

My old mare used to get abceses due to her Cushings.Once the farrier had parred the hole and got the gunk out i used to twice a day flush out the hole with iodine in a syringe then plug the hole with damp cotton wool.It soon seemed to heal.

firstly - very mad if anyone other than a farrier had started making holes in my horses foot.

Secondly - you should only do wet poultices for 2 / 3 days absolute max - and then swap to dry poultice.

When you were wet poulitcing how often were you changing the poultice, and what was on the poultice when you took it off?

If you carry on wet poulticing you can make healing slower - I wouldn't personally alternate between wet and dry poultice - do wet for 2 / 3 days, until the worst of the pus has come out, and then swap to dry poultice.

What has your farrier suggested to do now that it hasn't healed?

OMFG i would be absolutely fuming but then again my YO would do something that stupid!!!!

and hoofs take ages to regrow, so it wouldn't heal in days it would take weeks.

ETA you don't know what sort of damage she could have done stabbing a knife into your horses hoof, and was the knife clean could she have caused a infection etc.

I would be absolutely livid, yes.

I use aloe to heal everything! Obviously

Dilute aloe vera soap, rinsed off with aloe vera spray solution and once absorbed, aloe vera gelly on top. It's replaced my entire first aid kit, pretty much... and works better!

i know i was maaaaad! i wanted to rip her a new one but end of day she been taking my other horse out and bringing him in recently, so didnt want to ruin it. just made sure farrier got point across to her.
we did wet politce 3 times a day for think it was 3 days, and it was mostly blood that came out, bit gunk. then we went t dry poultice and nothing really, shes been off poultices for 3/4 days now and farrier said to use hydrogen peroxide on it to help harden it up, and some kevin bacon stuff to plug the hole. its just a small soft bit that i want to heal so i can get her out in field ad away from yo, dread t think what happens when im not there, i know she goes in and looks at her foot!
