I thought you also had to hunt your horse from the meet to gone one o'clock a certain amount of times and have your card signed by the master of the hunt in order to qualify. Am off to my first ever P2P in a couple of weeks - yay!
Point-to-point is for amateur riders on horses that don't race 'under rules', I've seen retired steeplechasers run in point to points [including a former Grand National entrant]. I think they're usually held on non permanent courses - I know the one near us is, every year they build a track in the 'lower field', there's no grandstand or anything fancy, maybe a chip van. A lot more informal and relaxed than 'proper' racing, so leave your top hat and tails at home!
yup point to pointing is for amateurs. its also how trainers get their licenses so they can race 'under rules'. think they have to have so many winners in certain point to point races before they can apply to be national hunt trainers.
