This could get long!!

Basically I have a mare who I have owned for 5yrs - a very tricky but talented mare who after years of giving her chances and her not behaving I decided to breed from her and she has had a cracking filly. A girl who I pay to ride out my eventers for me a couple of times a week while i'm at uni approached me a few months ago about taking my mare on loan once foal was weaned which I agreed to as she was bored being in the field and so thought a break before having another foal would do her good.

When it came down to it the lady could not afford to take her and pay for livery so the mare has stayed with us, she is paying for her shoes and we are still having to pay for everything else and considering no grass she is out 24/7 living off hay so not exactly cheap! My mare also needs a new saddle which I am going to have to pay for with my saved up birthday money as she is currently riding in my saddle which isn't ideal as sometimes I cannot ride because she is or I have to be done by a certain time as she is coming to ride.

As i am away at uni monday-friday my Mum is an absolute super star and looks after all the horses for me. So my question is could I ask this lady to give my Mum a hand with putting all the horses out in the morning and bringing them in at night so my Mum can have a break in the week in return for her basically having a free horse? Or is this unreasonable of me?

Any opinions/suggestions appreciated! Sorry for the huge essay!!

It's not unreasonable and you can only ask. It's not like you're doubling the cost so I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem to suggest it and see what she says.

That's not unreasonable at all. There is a girl who rides one of ours and she pays for every other set of shoes - he is only shod in front. Other than that, I ask that she wipes his bridle over after use, skips out his stable and leaves him groomed, rugged and with a full water bucket and haynet.

I don't think thats too much to ask - and look at it this way - if they can't manage that little bit of work, they'd never cope with a horse on their own!

Too be honest with you its the least you could expect. Unless she has a mega good reason for not helping I would think she is just taking advantage of you!!

There are loads of people who would do/pay more than she is for the chance to ride

I think she should of asked long before now what she can do in exchange for having the chance to ride your horse!!!! Sounds like she's had a great deal until now so it's the least she can do in exchange!!
