Can I ditch the nuts?

Hi guys,

Just after a bit of feeding advice...I am currently feeding my two boys (15.2 ISH in work and 16.2 WB retired) the same quantities which are as follows twice a day:

1 scoop Dengi Alfa-A
1 scoop of Mollased sugar beet
1 scoop of D&H Fi-Fi nuts
1 net of very good quality haylage

They are both doing really well on this so I probably shouldn't alter it, but as they are doing very well, could I save myself some money and drop the nuts? The reason why I keep feeding the nuts is for the vits and mins as I believe I am feeding the correct quantities to achieve this but would they get enough vits and mins from the 12 hours daily grass they get (ok for time of year) and the haylage, beet and Alfalfa? Don't want to drop nuts and then have to replace with an expensive balancer...

What are your thoughts?

No, I wouldn't drop the nuts. I would probably half the amount given to your retired horse though.

Thanks - Half the nuts or half the whole feed? The ISH is looking better than the WB though, although the WB is looking absolutely fine - he's a big boy which is why I've kept them on the same quantities.

WOW! My 17hh boy gets half that! (apart from the haylage- he gets 6 sections of hay) lol!

Just a few thoughts:

Generally I think if it aint broke, dont try to fix it however are they just maintaining weight or putting it on?

I prefer to cut feed rations a little at this time of year in preparation for the spring grass.

I'm not sure how balanced a diet it is that you are feeding and I like to feed a general purpose supplement like equivite to ensure that they get all they need.

I do like feeding nuts as they add a little interest to the bucket but maybe cut the quanities? I find my boy does well on nuts so he just gets a quarter of a scoop per feed.

This year i have cut out the nuts to see if my horses need them and to save me money as im feeding a few horses.
Mine have Hi Fi and speedi beet and they are doing great on them.

Thanks guys this is great - I like the idea of feeding a high fibre diet, and like you said, spring grass will be through soon, and my WB is prone to ballooning in the summer!
The ISH is maybe putting on a little weight on this but the WB is maintaining...maybe i'll half or quarter the nuts and keep beet and Alfa the same as that's cheaper!

I also only feed beet and chaff to my 2 one is 19 one is nearly 2 but they get a vit and mineral supplement too - In the summer they will just get a hand full of the hifi Moll free that they have now
